Inquiry and Guidance
Shaykh Taqi al-Din Ali al-Subki ﵀ was asked about combining the Maghrib and Isha prayers early. He gave a fatwa allowing this, and it was done. He passed away after the Isha prayer, before midnight (1) on the night of Monday, the third of Dhu al-Qa'dah, in the year 748 AH, in Damascus, at the school named after Umm al-Salih, in his residence hall. His funeral prayer was held on Monday at the Dhuhr prayer in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. He was buried at Bab al-Saghir, and among those who attended his funeral was his student, Taj al-Din Abu Nasr Abdul Wahab bin Ali al-Subki, author of "Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyyah al-Kubra". In "At-Tabaqat", he noted "9/ (106)": Our Shaykh al-Dhahabi recited to us, from his own words for himself (2):
Youth has departed as if it never existed...
And gray hairs have come to us instead...Whoever has witnessed the curve and purity...
After these two, there is only the prayer.
Words of Praise
Furthermore, Shaykh Abdul Wahab bin Ali al-Subki, known as Taj al-Din, recited to us his own poem, which he sent with me to my father ﵀. In my view, it is the last poem he composed, as it was during his illness, two or three days before his death.
Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi ﵀, in his last poem, praised Taqi al-Din Ali al-Subki, father of Taj al-Din Abdul Wahab, the author of "At-Tabaqat":
Taqi al-Din, O Judge of realms...
We are merely servants, whereas you are a master.
You have attained glory in both religion and the world...
Reaching the pinnacle of knowledge.
In judgments, you are our best, Ali...
And among servants, with Anas ibn Malik.
Like Ibn Ma'in in memorization and critique...
In fatwas, akin to Sufyan and Malik.
And Fakhir al-Din in debate and research...
In grammar, as Al-Mubarrad and Ibn Malik.
You will dwell near Ridwan...
Moved away from Malik's fires.
Intercede for people in fur garments...
To clothe them even if from your own wealth.
That you may receive the good book in your right...
And not be given your book in your left.
Taqi al-Din Ali al-Subki lamented, saying:
(1) Tabaqat al-Shafiʿiyya by Al-Subki "9/105-106".
(2) The two verses are in: Shadharat al-Dhahab "6/155", and Dhayl Tadhkirat al-Huffaz "37".
