The Conversion of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq

As reported by Al-Bayhaqi (2:163-164), “Indeed, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) met the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and said, 'Is it true what Quraysh say, O Muhammad, about you forsaking our gods, casting aspersions on our intelligence, and declaring our ancestors as infidels?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded, 'Indeed, I am the messenger and prophet of Allah, sent to convey His message and invite you with truth. By Allah, it is the truth, I invite you, Abu Bakr, to worship Allah alone, without partners, and to not worship anything else and to obey Him,' and he recited the Quran to him. Abu Bakr accepted Islam, denounced the idols, removed polytheism, and affirmed the truth of Islam. Abu Bakr returned as a believing confirmer.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'I never invited anyone to Islam without them hesitating and pondering, except for Abu Bakr who did not hesitate.' Al-Bayhaqi stated, 'And that is because he had already witnessed the signs of the Prophethood of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and heard about his character before his call to Islam, so when he was invited, he had already reflected and made up his mind and did not hesitate.'

The Conversion of Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari

Reported by Muslim in his Sahih, in the virtues of Abu Dharr, and transmitted by Al-Bayhaqi (2:208), Abu Dharr said, 'I was a quarter of the Muslims, three people embraced Islam before me, and I'm the fourth. I went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, 'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, I testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger' - and I saw joy in the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu Dharr's Conversion Story

The comprehensive and noble story of Abu Dharr's conversion to Islam is narrated in the trusted books of Sunnah, such as Bukhari and Muslim, among others. These books narrate this story in various aspects, rich with lessons and admonitions. When Abu Dharr learned about the Prophet's mission (peace and blessings be upon him), he told his brother Anis:

The Quest of the Prophet's Knowledge

"Ride to this valley, and learn for me the knowledge of this man who claims he's a prophet; receiving news from the heavens. Listen to his words, then return to me." Anis set out to Mecca where he heard the words of the Messenger, peace and blessings upon him. He then returned to Abu Dharr and said: "I saw him commanding noble morals."

The Perception of the People

Abu Dharr asked him, "What do the people say about him?" He answered, "They say he’s a poet, a sorcerer, and since Anis was a poet himself, he resumed his narration and said: "I have heard the soothsayers but what he says does not resemble their words. I compared his words to all forms of poetry and, by God, no one could claim it's poetry. And, by God, he is truthful, while they are the liars."

The Journey to Mecca

Abu Dharr questioned his brother: "Are you satisfied enough for me to set out?" He replied: "Yes, but be cautious of Mecca's people as they bear great hostility towards him." Abu Dharr prepared, loaded his bag with water, and embarked on his journey to Mecca. He arrived, went to the mosque, and started searching for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, but he didn't recognize him. He followed his brother's advice not to ask about him and to be careful around the people of Mecca.

Finding Shelter

Into the night, he laid down to sleep. Ali saw him, recognised him as a stranger and invited him to his house without asking any questions. They spent the night and the next day Abu Dharr carried his belongings and went to the mosque, where he remained for the day. He didn't get to see the Prophet, peace be upon him, until nightfall and returned to his sleeping place. Ali saw him again and said, "Isn't it time for the man to recognize his home?"

Ali's Curiosity

Ali took him to his home without asking anything. On the third day, when they were at home, Ali asked him: "Won't you tell me what brought you here?" He replied, "If you granted me your confidence and guidance, then I shall... " So he did, and Abu Dharr told him his story.
