The Prophetic Signs in Zaid Ibn Sa'na's Embrace of Islam

'By Allah, we were eagerly awaiting the future events, when Zubair emerged, his robe glittering as he darted about. Exclaiming, "Good news! The Negus has triumphed, may Allah destroy his enemies, and establish him in his land." We have never known happiness like this before,' she said. 'The Negus returned, his enemy destroyed by Allah, well-established in his land, and entrusted with the affairs of Abyssinia. With him, we were in a good place until we met the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) in Mecca.'

Abdullah Ibn Salam said, 'When Allah, the Glorious and Exalted wished to guide Zaid Ibn Sa'na, he said, "There isn't a single characteristic of prophethood that I haven't recognized in Mohammed (peace be upon him) when I looked at his face, except two - his forbearance overcomes his ignorance and his forbearance increases as ignorance against him intensifies. Thus, I carefully approached him, trying to understand his tolerance and ignorance."'

'One day, the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) came out of his chambers with Ali Ibn Abi Talib. A man on his camel approached, looking like a Bedouin. The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, the village of Banu So-and-So has embraced Islam, but they entered the faith with the hope of provision. Now they are stricken with a year of drought and severe scarcity of rainfall. I fear, O Messenger of Allah, they may leave Islam with expectations, just as they entered it with hopes. What do you think if you send them something to help them?" The Prophet, peace be upon him, looked towards a man by his side, who I think was Ali, who said, "Nothing remains, O Messenger of Allah."'

Zaid Ibn Sa'na continues, 'I then stepped forward and said, "O Muhammad, would you sell me a set amount of dates from the orchard of Banu So-and-So for such-and-such a due date?" He replied, "No, O Jew! But I will sell you a known amount of dates for such-and-such a due date, but I won't specify the orchard of Banu So-and-So." I agreed, made the deal, and gave him around eighty ounces of gold for known quantity of dates for such-and-such a due date, which I gave to the man,'

Zaid ibn Su'nah's Incident with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

It was narrated: Zaid ibn Su'nah said, “I lent the Prophet (PBUH) and his Companions some money. Two or three days before the due date of repayment, the Prophet (PBUH), alongside Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, were attending a funeral of a man from the Ansar. I approached him and grabbed the collar and cloak of his shirt. I looked him in the eye sternly and said, 'Will you not repay my due, O Muhammad? By Allah, I have only known the tribe of Abdul Muttalib to be delayers of due debts.' Umar ibn al-Khattab turned to me, his eyes circling in his face like orbs, he glared at me and said, 'O enemy of Allah, do you say this to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)? By the One who revealed the Truth to him, if I did not fear God’s retribution, I would've struck your head off with my sword!'

The Prophet's Response

Despite Umar's anger, the Prophet (PBUH) remained calm, quiet and smiling. He then told Umar, 'Both Zaid and I needed something different from you. You should have advised me to pay my debt kindly and him to request repayment gracefully. Go with him, O Umar, pay him back his due, and add an additional twenty sa'a of dates due to what you have frightened him with.’”

Zaid ibn Su’nah then said that Umar took him, paid him his due, and added twenty sa'a of dates. When Zaid inquired about the surplus, Umar informed him that it was an order from the Prophet (PBUH) due to the fear he instilled in him.

Zaid ibn Su'nah's Declaration

Zaid ibn Su’nah then asked Umar if he knew who he was. Upon learning the identity of Zaid, Umar was surprised and asked why he had behaved the way he did with the Prophet (PBUH). Zaid explained that all signs of Prophethood he had seen manifested upon seeing the face of the Prophet (PBUH), except for two: his forbearance precedes his ignorance, and his forbearance increases when met with ignorance. According to Zaid, these last two signs were confirmed with his test. He then vowed half of his wealth to be given as charity to the Prophet's Ummah, and commenced his speech to declare his faith in Allah, Islam as his religion and Muhammad as his Prophet.

According to this narration, Zaid performed many acts of faith with the Prophet (PBUH). Later, he participated in numerous battles and was martyred in the course of one of them.
