Chapter: Mention of the Names of Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)
Allah, Glorified and Exalted, said: "Muhammad is Allah's Messenger [362]" and He said: "And giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad [363]".
We narrated, Abu Abdillah the Hafiz, through dictation, he said: We narrated, Abu Ja'far al-Baghdadi, word for word, he said: Narrated to us, Ali bin Abdulaziz, he said: Narrated to us, Amro bin Aun al-Wasiti, he said: Narrated to us, Khalid bin Abdullah, from Dawood bin Abi Hind, from Al-Abbas bin Abdulrahman, from Kindeer bin Saeed, from his father, who said:
I made pilgrimage during the Age of Ignorance (pre-Islamic time), and I saw a man circumambulating the Kaaba reciting, "O Lord, Return my rider Muhammad... O Lord, return him and provide for me a substitute", another man said, "May the Lord bring him back". So I asked: Who is this? They replied: This is Abdul-Muttalib bin Hashim, he sent his grandson Muhammad to search for his camels. He did not send him on an errand but he succeeded in it, and now he has been overdue. He later returned with the camels, whereupon Abdul-Muttalib embraced him, saying: "My son, I was so worried about you, I had never been so worried before. By Allah, I will not send you on an errand [362] again."

Hadith Translation
Abu al-Hussein Mohammad bin al-Hussein bin al-Fadl al-Qattan, from Baghdad, told us that Abdullah bin Ja'far bin Durustawayh told him that he was informed by Ya'qoob bin Sufyan, who was informed by Abu Bakr al-Humaidi, who heard from Sufyan that Abu al-Zinaad told him, having heard from al-A'raj, who in turn heard from Abu Hurairah. He said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do you not marvel at how Allah, Glorious and Majestic, diverts the insults and curses of Quraish away from me? They insult a man named Mudhammam (disgraceful), and they curse a man named Mudhammam, but I am Muhammad (the praised one)." (365) This is narrated by Bukhari in his Sahih, from Ali bin Abdullah, from Sufyan.
Abu al-Hussein bin al-Fadl, said: Abd Allah bin Ja'far, told us that he was informed by Ya'qoob bin Sufyan. It is said that Abu al-Yaman told him, who heard from Shu'ayb, from al-Zuhri, who was informed by Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut'im, from his father, who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "I have several names: I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmad, and I am al-Mahi (the eraser), by whom Allah erases disbelief, and I am al-Hashir (the gatherer), before whom people will be gathered for judgment, and I am al-Aqib (the last), after whom there will be no one else." The Hadith on the Names of the Prophet
This Hadith was narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih, from Abi al-Yaman. It was also narrated by Muslim from 'Abd ibn Humaid, from Abi al-Yaman. Likewise, it was recorded by Muslim from Ibn 'Uyayna and 'Uqail, from Az-Zuhri. Al-Bukhari also narrated it from Malik ibn Anas, from Az-Zuhri.[367]
Abu al-Husain Ali [ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah][368] ibn Bisran Al-'Adl, from Baghdad, informed us saying: Ismail ibn Muhammad As-Saffar narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Ma'mar informed us, from Az-Zuhri, from Muhammad ibn Jubair ibn Mut'im, from his father, who said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: 'Indeed, I have names: I am Ahmad[369] and I am Muhammad, I am Al-Mahi, by whom Allah erases disbelief, I am Al-Hashir, people will be gathered on my footprints, I am Al-Aqib'.
The narrator said: I asked Az-Zuhri: 'And what is Al-Aqib?' He replied: 'The one after whom there is no Prophet[370]'."
Muslim narrated it in his Sahih, from 'Abd ibn Humaid, from 'Abd al-Razzaq. It can be found in Al-Muwatta in the chapter on the Names of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him (2:1004), and Al-Darimi in the chapter on the Names of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him (2:317). Imam Ahmad also recorded it in his Musnad (4:80, 81, 84). Al-Bukhari also recorded it in his Book of Tafsir, Tafsir of Surah As-Saff, Fath al-Bari (8:640), and Muslim in his Book of Virtues (Chapter on the Names of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Hadith number 124, page 4:1828) and Jam' al-Wasa'il in the explanation of Ash-Shamail (2:317).

Hadeeth Translation
The narration was also extracted from the Hadeeth of Younus ibn Yazeed, from Az-Zuhri. It was stated in the Hadeeth, "I am Al-Aaqib (i.e., The Last), there won't be anyone after me. Allah has called me compassionate and merciful."
Indeed, we have been informed by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, who said we were told by Abu Abdullah ibn Ya'qoub, who said we heard it from Hasan ibn Sufyan, who heard it from Harmalah ibn Yahya, who heard it from Ibn Wahb, who heard it from Younus who learned it from Ibn Shihab. It mentioned that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said. It was narrated by Muslim from Harmalah:
The interpretation of Al-Aaqib could possibly be the statement of Az-Zuhri, as clarified by Ma'amar. His statement of, "And Allah, the Exalted, called Him kind and merciful" is also from the statement of Az-Zuhri. And Allah knows best.
Abu Al-Hasan: Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn ibn Dawood Al-Alawi, may Allah have mercy on him, informed us, saying: Abu Bakr: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Dullawayh Addaqqaq told us, said: Ahmad ibn Hafs ibn Abdullah informed me, who said, "My father informed me, 'Ibrahim ibn Tahman narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Maysarah, from Az-Zuhri, from Muhammad ibn Jubair ibn Mut'im, from his father, From the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him; he said, 'I have five names: I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmed, and I am Al-Mahi, by whom Allah obliterates disbelief, and I am Al-Hashr, at whose feet people will be gathered, and I am Al-Aaqib, meaning The Sealer."(371)[(371)] The Hadeeth has passed in the margin (366).

Narration by Nafi' bin Jubair
Narrated by Nafi' bin Jubair ibn Mut'im, from his father, he recounted them with the seal, six: [372].
We were informed by Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Qattan, in Baghdad, he said: We were informed by Abdullah ibn Ja'far, he said: We were told by Yaqub ibn Sufyan, he said: We were told by Hajjaj, he said: We were told by Hammad, from Ja'far ibn Abi Wahshiya, from Nafi ibn Jubair bin Mut'im, from his father, he said: "I heard the Prophet, peace be upon him, saying: "I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmed, and the Gatherer, the Eraser, the Seal, and the Last" [373].
Renowned Scholars' Thoughts
[372] The scholars said: "The multiplicity of names is indicative of the greatness of the named and his elevation, and that is due to care for him and his affair, and thus you see the attempts and care in Arab speech are mostly naming.
Imam al-Nawawi said: "Most of these names that they mentioned are attributes like Last and Gatherer, so applying the name to them is metaphorical, Al-Ghazali quoted: "The agreement is that we may not call the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, by a name by which his noble self did not call him," and this was approved by Hafiz Ibn Hajar in Al-Fath.
Some have devoted classifications to the names of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, created, and a group of them versified it, among them Sheikh: Abu Abdullah al-Qurtubi the commentator, and the scholar Zeini Abdul-Basit bin Imam: Badr al-Din al-Balqini. His Meem poem was unique, and no one wove in his style, and Al-Suyuti arranged his names, peace be upon him, according to the letters of the dictionary in his book: "Al-Riyadh Al-Aniqa in explaining the names of the best of creation."
The narration of Nafi' bin Jubair from his father
[373] Narrated by Imam Ahmad in his "Musnad" (4: 81), and Abu Naim in "Al-Dalail"(26), Ibn Dahiyah said: "It is a good chain of narration," and Al-Suyuti said: "But it is connected, as Nafi narrated it from his father."

The Names of the Prophet Muhammad
Adam son of Abi Iyas narrated to us, saying: Layth son of Saad told us. And Abu Husayn son of Fadl informed us, saying: Abdallah son of Ja'far told us, saying: Ya'qub son of Sufyan told me, saying: Abu Salih told me, saying: Layth told me, saying: Khaled son of Yazid, from Sa'eed son of abi Hilal, from Okba son of Muslim, from Nafi' son of Jubayr son of Mut'im:
He entered upon Abd Al Malik son of Marwan. Abd al-Malik asked him: "Do you know the names of the Prophet, peace be upon him, which Jubayr son of Mut'im used to recount?" He replied: "Yes, they are six: Muhammad, Ahmad, Khatam, Hashir, Aaqib, and Mahi."
As for the Hashir, he was sent with the Hour as a warner to you in advance of a severe punishment. As for Aaqib, he comes after all other prophets. As for Mahi, indeed Allah, Most High, has erased by him the sins of those who followed him.
Abu Bakr son of Furak informed us, saying: Abdallah son of Ja'far Al-Asfahani told us, saying: Yunus son of Habib told us, saying: Abu Dawood Al-Tyalisi told us, saying: Al-Mas'udi told us, from 'Amru son of Murrah. And Abduallah the Hafidh informed us, saying: Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al-Hashimi told me, saying: Ahmad bin Salama told me, saying: Ishaq bin Ibrahim told us, saying: Jarir told us, from Al-A'mash, from 'Amru bin Murrah, from Abu Ubaidah, from Abu Musa:
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, named himself for us, saying: I am Muhammad.

Prophetic Names from Hadith Al-A’mash
It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah, blessed be Him, has given Himself names, some of which have been preserved. Then He mentioned them. The narration is proven authentic by Muslim in Sahih, from Ishaq Ibn Ibrahim.
Abu Al-Qasim informed us, Zaid Ibn Abi Hashim Al-Alawi in Kufa, said: Abu Ja'far, Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Duhaym, narrated: Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah told us: Wakia related from Al-Amash, from Abu Saleh, said: The Messenger of Allah, blessed be Him, said: "O people, I am a mercy bestowed upon you."
However, this narration is interrupted and is narrated connectedly.
Hadith reported by Hussain Ibn Muhammad Ibn Ziad and Ibrahim Ibn Abi Talib
Abu Abd Allah Al-Hafiz told us that Abu Al-Fadhl, Muhammad Ibn Ibrahim, narrated that Al-Hussein Ibn Muhammad Ibn Ziad and Ibrahim Ibn Abi Talib reported that they heard Ziad Ibn Yahya Al-Hassani narrate the Hadith.
Muslim mentioned this Hadith in the book of virtues, under the chapter of the names of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon Him, Hadith number (126), (4: 1828-1829), and Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (4: 404).
Brief Notes and References
There is a mention of it in Al-Jami’ Al-Saghir (1: 348) on the authority of Ibn Saad and Al-Hakim on the authority of Abu Saleh Marwosala, and Al-Hakim on his authority from Abu Hurairah, and he referred to its authenticity, and Al-Haytham narrated it in Majma’ Al-Zawaid (8:257) and attributed it to Al-Bazzar, and Al-Tabrani in the small, and he said: The men of Al-Bazzar are men of Sahih.
There is an indication mark missing from the copy (H), and in (H): "Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad".

He said: The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, stated: "I am but a gift of mercy."
This narration is the version of al-Isfarayini. And in the narration of Abu Abdullah, he narrated from Al-A'amash, and said: "Oh people, I am but a gift of mercy."

385: This has been mentioned in a group of the names of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in the narration of Abu Tufayl from Ibn Marduwayh, and it was reported by Al-Suyuti in Al-Durr Al-Manthur (5:258) from Al-Bayhaqi. Al-Suhaili said: "If it was a name of the Prophet, peace be upon him, it would have been said: Yasin with a Dammah, as in when he said: 'O Yusef, O the Righteous,' and student Ibn Dahiyah said: 'This is not obligatory. Al-Kalbi read it with Dammah. that refers to the omission of the calling letter."

Tafseer from Hadith and Traditions:
According to Ibn Fadail, who quotes Al-Kalbi, who in turn quotes Abi Saleh from Ibn Abbas pertaining to God's saying: "Taha, We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed" [20:1-2]. The meaning is, "O man, we did not send down to you the Qur'an to cause you distress." It was a common practice that he spends the night standing on his feet in prayer. In the dialect of Banu 'Ak, if you call on a person saying 'O man', he will not respond to you. But if you call him 'Taha' he would turn to face you.
About the Prophets with Dual Names:
Abu Abdillah Al-Haafidh reported, hearing Abu Zakaria, Yahya Ibn Muhammad Al-Anbari say that Al-Khalil Ibn Ahmad said: "There are five prophets who have two names: our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who is also known as Ahmad. Jesus, who is also known as Christ, peace be upon him, Israel also known as Jacob, peace be upon him, Yunus also known as Dhun-Nun, peace be upon him, and Elyas who is also known as Dhul-Kifl, peace be upon him.
Names of Our Prophet in the Qur'an:
Abu Zakaria said: Our Prophet, peace be upon him, has five names in the Qur'an: Muhammad, Ahmad, Abdullah, Taha, and Yaseen. God Almighty said, mentioning Muhammad, peace be upon him: "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"[48:29], and He said: "And bringing good tiding of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad"[61:6]. Furthermore, mentioning Abdullah, Allah says: "And when Allah's servant stood up praying to Him, they fell on him in a crowding manner"[72:19]. On the night of Jinn, they were almost crowding him one over another, just like 'al-libada' - a metaphor for clustering or crowding.
Notes:
Regarding verses "Taha" [20:1-2] it is mentioned that these are among the sacred names of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as referenced in a weak Hadith reported by Ibn Mardawaih from Abi Al-Tufail which suggests that 'Taha' means 'the one who is pure from defects and sins', or 'the guide to all goodness'.

The Suf, Qur'an, and Exalted Titles of the Prophet
Suf is layered on top of each other, becoming like fabric. The Exalted and Majestic God said, "Ta-Ha. We have not sent down to you the Qur'an for you to be distressed" [(391)]. And, indeed, the Qur'an was sent down only to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and none other. He, the Exalted and Majestic, said "Ya-Seen" [(392)], meaning "O Man," and the "Man" here refers to the intelligent one, who is Prophet Mohammed, peace and blessings be upon him. Indeed, you are one of the messengers [(393)].
The Elevated Names of the Prophet
I say, others among the learned ones have added more. They said: Allah, Exalted be, named him in the Qur'an: "Messenger, Prophet, Unlettered", and named him "Witness, Bearer of good tidings, Warner, One who calls to Allah with His permission, a Luminous Lamp". He also named him "Most Kind, Most Merciful", and named him "Plain Warner", and named him "Reminder". He made him a Mercy, a Blessing, a Guide, and named him "Servant". May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him and upon his family abundantly.
Hadith Reports
We were informed [(394)] by Abu al-Husayn bin al-Fadl, who was told by Abdullah bin Ja’far, who heard it from Ya’qoob bin Sufyan, who was told by Abu Uthman, who heard it from Abdullah (who is known as Ibn Al-Mubarak), who was informed by Ibrahim bin Ishaq, who heard from Al-Musayyib bin Rafi', who said: Ka'b reports that Allah, Exalted be, said to Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "My servant [I have named you] [(395)] the Trusting (Mutawakkil), the Chosen (Mukhtar)".
Further Hadith Account
We were informed by Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, who was told by Khalaf bin Muhammad al-Bukhari, who heard it from Salih bin Muhammad bin Habib al-Hafiz, who was told by Muhammad bin Maymoun

Traditions of Sufyan Ibn Uyainah
Al-Makki reported and said: A narrative was given to us by Sufyan Ibn Uyainah, from Ali Ibn Zaid, who said: I heard him say, "They gathered, and they debated: of all the dwellings [396] which one is the finest as uttered by the Arabs?" They replied: "That which was said by Abu Talib to the Prophet, peace be upon him:
'And a portion of his name was cleaved off to glorify him, So the possessor of the throne is praised, and this is Muhammad.'
This narration was also reported by Al-Musayyib Ibn Wadih [397], from Sufyan, who said, "'To glorify him'. [396] In (H): 'House of God'. [397] In (H): 'In the narration of Al-Musayyib'."
