Chapter on the Challenge of Utbah ibn Rabi'ah and His Companions to Duel, and the Manifestation of the Support of Allah for His Religion

Abu al-Qasim 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Ubayd Allah al-Hurfi narrated to us in Baghdad, saying: Hamzah ibn Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn Salamah narrated to us, saying: 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Israel narrated to us from Abu Ishaq from Harithah ibn Mudarrib, from 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "Utbah, his brother Shaybah, and his son al-Walid came out challenging, saying: 'Is there anyone to duel?' Then, a young man from the Ansar named Shaybah came out for the challenge. Utbah said: 'We do not intend these individuals to duel us, rather we wish someone from our relatives, from the descendants of 'Abd al-Muttalib, to duel us.' Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: 'Stand up, O 'Ali; stand up, O Hamzah; stand up, O 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith.' So, Allah, the Exalted, killed Utbah and Shaybah, the sons of Rabi'ah, and al-Walid ibn Utbah, while 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harith was wounded."[1]

Abu 'Ali al-Rudhbari reported to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Dasa narrated to us, saying: Abu Dawud narrated to us, saying: Harun ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, saying: 'Uthman ibn 'Umar narrated to us, saying: Israel narrated to us. He mentioned it in his chain, and its meaning was: "Then Hamzah went towards Utbah, and I went towards Shaybah. 'Ubaydah and al-Walid exchanged two blows, each hitting his opponent once, then we were upon al-Walid, so we killed him and took 'Ubaydah captive."[1]

[1] An excerpt from a longer hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad in his "Musnad" (1:117), for the full narration and further details, refer to the footnote in the chapter "How the Battle Began."

Story of the Battle of Badr

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz told us, saying: Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub said: Ahmed ibn Abdul Jabbar told us, saying: Yunus narrated to us from Ibn Ishaq, who told the story of the Battle of Badr. He said: "Then Utbah, Shaybah, and Al-Waleed called for a duel. A group of Ansar youth, including Awf and Mu'awwidh sons of Afra, and another man called Abdullah ibn Rawaha, came forth and said they were from the Ansar. The Quraysh asked for their champions to come forward. The Prophet, peace be upon him, called Hamza, Ali, and Ubaydah. When they approached, the Quraysh acknowledged the prowess of the Ansar champions. Ubaydah duelled with Utbah and they both struck each other, but Ubaydah stood his ground. Hamza faced Shaybah and killed him on the spot. Ali fought Al-Waleed and killed him instantly. Then they both attacked Utbah and killed him, carrying their companion off triumphantly."

Interpretation of Quranic Verse

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz said: Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Duhaym Ash-Shaybani in Kufa informed us that Ahmad ibn Hazim ibn Abi Garzah told us, Yunus ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Sufyan ibn Saeed reported from Abu Hashim from Abu Majlaz from Qais ibn Ubaid from Abu Dhar, who said: "This verse was revealed about two disputants who contended regarding their Lord, Ali, Hamza, Ubaydah ibn Al-Harith, Utbah ibn Rabiah, Shaybah ibn Rabiah, and Al-Waleed ibn Utbah." This narration is found in Sahih Bukhari in the Tafsir of Surah Al-Hajj, in a section mentioning the two disputants contending over their Lord (Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 19).

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran told us: Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Saffar informed us that Muhammad ibn Abdul-Malik narrated to us that Yazid ibn Harun told us that Sulayman al-Taymi narrated from Abu Majlaz from Qays ibn 'Ubād that 'Ali, Hamza, 'Ubaydah ibn al-Harīth, 'Atbah ibn Rabi'ah, Shibah ibn Rabi'ah, and al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah engaged in mutual staring. Two opponents contended regarding their Lord among them.

Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz informed us: Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Warraqu from Baghdad told us that Ibrahim ibn 'Ubayd Allah al-Basri related to us that Muhammad ibn al-A'la said that Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman al-Taymi narrated from his father from Abu Majlaz from Qays ibn 'Ubād that 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will be the first to kneel for arbitration before Allah on the Day of Resurrection." Qays added and mentioned the substance of the past events. This was narrated by al-Bukhari in Sahih from Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Raqashi from Mu'tamir.
