Hisham said: My father narrated to us on the authority of Qatada, who said: We do not know of any group of the living that has more martyrs on the Day of Resurrection than the Ansar.

Qatada said: Anas informed us that seventy of the Ansar were killed on the Day of Uhud, seventy on the Day of Bi'r Ma'unah, and seventy on the Day of Yamamah.

Qatada said: On the day of Bi'r Ma'unah, during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and on the day of Yamamah, when they fought Musaylimah the Liar during the time of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

Imam Bukhari narrated this in Sahih from Amr ibn Ali from Mu'adh ibn Hisham.

Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran al-Adl of Baghdad told us that Abu Amr ibn al-Sammak informed him, who was told by Hanbal ibn Ishaq, who was told by Affan, who was told by Hammad ibn Salamah, who narrated from Thabit, from Anas, that he said: "Seventy of the Ansar (were martyred) on the day of Uhud, seventy on the day of Bi'r Ma'unah, seventy on the day of Mu'attah, and seventy on the day of Yamamah."

Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz told us that Abu al-Hasan Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Bayhaqi informed him, who was told by his grandfather al-Fadl ibn Muhammad, who was told by Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir al-Khuzami, who was told by Muhammad ibn Fulayh, who was told by Abdul Rahman ibn Harmalah, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, who said: Seventy of the Ansar were killed in three places: seventy on the day of Uhud, seventy on the day of Yamamah, and seventy on the day of Jisr Abu 'Ubayd.

Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir mentioned a mistake in the hadith of Thabit from Anas in this context, and this is well-known.

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Ibrahim said: Ma'n ibn 'Isa narrated to us, from Malik ibn Anas, from Yahya ibn Sa'id, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib - the same narration. Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan from Baghdad informed us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far al-Nahwi narrated to us, saying: Ya'qub ibn Sufyan informed us, saying: Haggag ibn Abi Mane' narrated to us, saying: My grandfather narrated to me, from az-Zuhri, who said: Ya'qub said and Zaid ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, saying: Ibn Thawr reported to us, from Ma'mar, from az-Zuhri, who said: The Battle of Uhud took place in Shawwal, six months after the Battle of Badr. On that day, the leader of the pagans was Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, went out with his companions until they met the pagans at Uhud, and they fought. That day, the casualties from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, were like half of those who were killed or captured among the pagans in the Battle of Badr. Among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, who were killed that day were Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, and Mus'ab ibn 'Umair of the Banu 'Abd ad-Dar, who was the first to gather the Muslims for Jumu'ah prayers in Madinah, even before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did so. Also, a group of emigrants from Quraysh were with them. Among the Ansar, about seventy men were killed, including Hanzala ibn Abu 'Amir, who was washed by the angels.

Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran informed us: Abu 'Amr ibn as-Sammak narrated to us, saying: Hambal ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Abdullah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Haggag narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Umar ibn 'Ata, meaning Ibn Warrad, narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah, the client of Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his statement: "Indeed you have a similar one," (Quran 3:165). He said: The Muslims killed seventy of the pagans and captured seventy of them on the Day of Badr.

The Battle of Uhud

In the Battle of Uhud, the polytheists among the Muslims numbered seventy. This is evidenced by the statement: "You have inflicted a loss similar to it." Ibn Jurayj reported that Jabir said: "We defeated them in the Battle of Badr, and they inflicted casualties on us in the Battle of Uhud."

Reports on Casualties

Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl narrated that Abdullah ibn Ja'far al-Nahwi informed them, saying: Ya'qub ibn Sufyan reported to us that Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir narrated from Ibn Fulayh, from Musa ibn 'Uqbah, from Ibn Shihab, who said that Ya'qub, Hassan ibn Abdullah, Uthman ibn Salih, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Abu al-Aswad, from Urwah. Ammar ibn Hasan reported from Salamah, from Ibn Ishaq, saying that with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of Uhud, some Muslims were killed, and their names were mentioned.

Musa said that the martyrs among the Muslims from the Quraysh and the Ansar numbered forty-nine, while Urwah said they were forty-four. Ibn Ishaq mentioned that they were sixty-five.

Authenticity of the Narration

It is mentioned in the connected hadith attributed to al-Bara' and Anas that the version with Anas is more correct. And Allah knows best.

Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz reported that Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated from Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar, who narrated from Yunus ibn Bukayr.

Events of the Battle of Uhud

Ibn Ishaq: All the Muslims who were martyred on the day of Uhud, may Allah have mercy on them, along with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, from the Muhajireen and the Ansar were sixty-five men. And all those whom Allah caused to be killed from the polytheists on the day of Uhud were twenty-two men.

Witnesses and Source

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz: Informed us that Abu Ja'far Al-Baghdadi informed us that Muhammad bin Amr bin Khalid told us that Ibn Lahi'a narrated from Abu Al-Aswad from Urwah, who said: All those who were killed with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on the day of Uhud from Quraysh and the Ansar were forty-seven men. And whoever was killed and taken captive among the polytheists on the day of Badr were eighty-eight men. And all those who were killed from the polytheists on the day of Uhud were nineteen men.

Abu Al-Husayn bin Al-Fadl: Informed us that Abu Bakr bin Attab narrated to us that Al-Qasim bin Abdullah bin Al-Mughirah reported to us from Ibn Abu Uwais that Ismail ibn Ibrahim bin Uqbah narrated from his uncle Musa ibn Uqbah regarding the number of those killed with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on the day of Uhud from Quraysh and the Ansar, which were forty-nine men. And those killed from the polytheists on the day of Uhud were sixteen men.

Abu Saeed bin Abi Amr: Informed us that Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub reported to us that Ar-Rabi' bin Sulaiman reported to us that Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Abu Azza Al-Jumahi was among those who were to be killed with no ransom on the day of Badr. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, left him for his daughters and took a covenant from him not to fight. But during the Battle of Uhud, he fought and was killed. The Prophet, peace be upon him, had requested him not to be let loose, and none of the polytheists was captured except him.

Conversation between Prophet Muhammad and a Companion

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a companion: "Grant me safety, and leave me to my daughters, and I will pledge not to fight against you." The companion replied: "Do not think I will deceive you twice by coming near you after going to Makkah to fight against you." The Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered that his neck be struck.
