Chapter: Chapter on what was reported regarding his marriage, peace be upon him, to Hafsa, the daughter of Omar bin Al-Khattab, and then to Zainab, the daughter of Khuzaimah, and his marriage of his daughter, Umm Kulthum, to Uthman bin Affan, after the death of his daughter Ruqayya, may Allah be pleased with them.

Chapter on the Marriages of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

This chapter discusses the marriage of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to Hafsah bint 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab, then to Zaynab bint Khuzaymah, and his marriage to his daughter Umm Kulthum to Uthman ibn Affan after the passing of his daughter Ruqayyah.

Narration of 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab

'Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, mentioned that when Hafsah, the daughter of 'Umar, was widowed from Khunays ibn Hudhafah Al-Sahmi, a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and passed away in Al-Madinah, 'Umar approached Uthman ibn Affan proposing for him to marry Hafsah. Uthman expressed hesitance at first but later declined, saying it was not the right time. 'Umar then approached Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq with the same proposal, to which Abu Bakr remained silent and did not respond. Consequently, 'Umar thought Abu Bakr was not interested and thus proceeded with arranging for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to marry Hafsah. Abu Bakr later approached 'Umar questioning him about why he did not return to him after proposing Hafsah. 'Umar explained that he did find Abu Bakr to be hesitant, but his respect for the Prophet's (peace be upon him) choice prevented him from pursuing the matter further.

بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي تَزَوُّجِهِ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ثُمَّ بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ خُزَيْمَةَ وَتَزْوِيجِهِ ابْنَتَهُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ مِنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ بَعْدَ وَفَاةِ ابْنَتِهِ رُقَيَّةَ رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُمْأَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّه الْحَافِظُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ: مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدُّورِيُّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّه أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّه بْنَ عُمَرَ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ عُمَرَ ابن الْخَطَّابٍ- رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُ- حِينَ تَأَيَّمَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ مِنْ خُنَيْسِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ السَّهْمِيِّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتُوُفِّيَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ «أَتَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْكَحْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ، فَقَالَ: سَأَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ، ثُمَّ لَقِيَنِي فَقَالَ:قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَتَزَوَّجَ يَوْمِي هَذَا.قَالَ عُمَرُ: فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ فَقُلْتُ إِنْ شِئْتَ زَوَّجْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ. فَصَمَتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا فَكُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْجَدَ مِنِّي عَلَى عُثْمَانَ، فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ ثُمَّ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَنْكَحْتُهَا إِيَّاهُ، فَلَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ:لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ عَلَيَّ حِينَ عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ حَفْصَةَ فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْكَ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ عُمَرُ:قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكَ فِيمَا عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ إِلَّا أَنِّي كُنْتُ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّه صلى اللَّه عليه وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ ذَكَرَهَا. فَلَمْ أَكُنْ لِأُفْشِيَ سِرَّ رَسُولِ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَلَوْ تَرَكَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّه صلى اللَّه عليه وَسَلَّمَ قَبِلْتُهَا» .

Hadith on Marriage Proposal

It was narrated by Al-Bukhari in Sahih that Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah reported from Ibrahim ibn Sa'd. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz told us that Abu Abdullah al-Saffar said that Ahmad ibn Mihran al-Asbahani told us that Ubayd Allah ibn Musa said that Ubayd ibn al-Tufail said that Rib'i ibn Hirash narrated to him, from Uthman ibn Affan, that Umar proposed to his daughter but he turned him down. The Prophet, peace be upon him, was informed of this and when Umar came to him, the Prophet said, "O Umar, shall I not tell you of a circumcision that is better for you than Uthman's, and I can tell Uthman of a circumcision that is better for him than yours?" Umar agreed, and the Prophet said, "Marry your daughter to me, and I will marry my daughter to Uthman." Umar initially refused but later agreed and proposed his daughter to Uthman, who accepted.

Marriage of the Prophet

Abu Abdullah ibn Mandah reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, married Zaynab bint Khuzayma after Hafsah. She was previously married to Husayn ibn al-Harith or his brother Tufail ibn al-Harith ibn Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf. Zaynab died in Medina as the Prophet's first wife to pass away without leaving any children with him.

Additional Information

It is reported that Zaynab was under the guardianship of Ubaydah ibn al-Harith. According to reports from Al-Zuhri, she was also under the guardianship of Abdullah ibn Jahsh before being killed in the Battle of Uhud. She passed away while the Prophet was alive, and she did not spend much time with him.

رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ [ (١) ] عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّه، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ.أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّه الْحَافِظُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّه الصَّفَّارُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّه بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ ابن الطُّفَيْلِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي رِبْعِيُّ بْنُ حِرَاشٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ «أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ إِلَى عُمَرَ ابْنَتَهُ فَرَدَّهُ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا أَنْ رَاحَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ قَالَ يَا عُمَرُ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى خَتَنٍ خَيْرٍ لَكَ مِنْ عُثْمَانَ وَأَدُلُّ عُثْمَانَ عَلَى خَتَنٍ خَيْرٍ لَهُ مِنْكَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّه قَالَ: زَوِّجْنِي ابْنَتَكَ وَأُزَوِّجُ عُثْمَانَ ابْنَتِي.قُلْتُ يُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ خَطَبَهَا عُثْمَانُ عَلَى مَا فِي هَذِهِ الرِّوَايَةِ فَرَدَّهُ عُمَرُ، ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُ فَعَرَضَهَا عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: سَأَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي ثُمَّ حِينَ أَحَسَّ بِمَا يُرِيدُ رَسُولُ اللَّه صلى اللَّه عليه وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ قَالَ مَا قَالَ» واللَّه أَعْلَمُ وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ بَعْدَ بَدْرٍ.أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّه الْحَافِظُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ:أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ:«ثُمَّ تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ حَفْصَةَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ خُزَيْمَةَ الْهِلَالِيَّةَ أُمَّ الْمَسَاكِينِ وَكَانَتْ قَبْلَهُ عِنْدَ الْحُصَيْنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَوْ عِنْدَ أَخِيهِ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ فَمَاتَتْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَوَّلُ نِسَائِهِ مَوْتًا لَمْ يُصِبْ رَسُولُ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عليه وَسَلَّمَ مِنْهَا وَلَدًا» [ (٢) ] .وَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّه بْنُ مَنْدَهْ كَانَتْ تَحْتَ عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ.وَرُوِّينَا عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ «أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَحْتَ عَبْدِ اللَّه بْنِ جحش وَقُتِلَ عَنْهَا يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ ثُمَّ تُوُفِّيَتْ وَرَسُولُ اللَّه صلى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَيٌّ لَمْ تَلْبَثْ مَعَهُ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا» .[ (١) ] البخاري عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّه فِي: ٦٧- كِتَابِ النكاح، (٣٣) باب عرض الإنسان ابنته او أخته على أهل الخير، الحديث (٥١٢٢) ، فتح الباري (٩: ١٧٥- ١٧٦) .[ (٢) ] سيرة ابن هِشَامٍ (٤: ٢٥٥) .
