Expedition of Badr: A Strategic Encounter
In this classical Arabic narrative, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions set out for a trade caravan led by Abu Sufyan. When Abu Sufyan evaded them, a man from the Banu Dhamrah tribe suggested breaking the treaty, but the Prophet solidified their loyalty and commitment. As they awaited Abu Sufyan's arrival, a passerby recognized them and warned Abu Sufyan. Despite this, the Banu Dhamrah held firm, refusing to engage in any betrayal.
The Encounter with Ibn Hums
It is recounted that Ibn Hums passed by the Quraysh and identified the Prophet and his companions waiting for Abu Sufyan. This encounter emphasized the tension and anticipation surrounding the forthcoming engagement.
Textual Artefacts
The passage recalls a specific incident involving the Banu Dhamrah tribe, highlighting their loyalty and restraint in the face of potential conflict. The Prophet's astute handling of the situation showcases his leadership and strategic acumen.

Abu Sufyan's Encounter
In preparation for a meeting, Abu Sufyan claimed their truthfulness and instructed the gathering to strengthen their resolve, collect wealth, and prepare adequately. After establishing themselves in Mecca, Prophet Muhammad and his companions departed for Madinah, in what became known as the Ghazwah of Jaysh al-Sawiq. This expedition took place in Sha'ban of the third year of the Islamic calendar.
Preparations for Badr
Prophet Muhammad mustered the Muslims for a meeting with Abu Sufyan to take place in Badr. The devil incited his supporters among the people, a situation compared to a story involving Moses' companion, Ukba. On their journey, the poet Ma'bad ibn Abi Ma'bad recited verses about their travels, causing a stir as they approached Mecca.
Arrival in Mecca
Upon reaching Mecca, the residents informed Ma'bad about the upcoming season of Badr. He shared news of Prophet Muhammad and his companions, their presence in Badr, and interactions with the Qurayshi leaders. This caused concern among the residents, leading them to discuss and allocate resources for the encounter.
Reporting of Events
Various narrators passed down this account, including Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, who recounted details from earlier sources. The arrival of Prophet Muhammad back from the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa', and his settlement in the last days of Jumada, is recorded in historical texts such as "Al-Bidayah wal-Nihayah." The story of Moses' companion Ukba is also mentioned in the same context.

Arrival at Badr
In the first part of Jumada al-Akhirah and then in Rajab, the Prophet set out in Sha'ban towards Badr for a meeting with Abu Sufyan. He waited for him in Badr for eight nights until Abu Sufyan arrived. Abu Sufyan left Mecca and reached the area of Dhuhran. Some people said that he had reached 'Usfan and was heading back. He then addressed the Quraysh saying that they needed an abundance year to graze their trees and drink milk. Since that year was one of drought, they should return. The people listened and returned, so the people of Mecca named them the "Sawiq Army" as a mockery since they supposedly went for the sole purpose of drinking sawiq.
Encounter with Makhshi bin Amr
While waiting for Abu Sufyan, Makhshi bin Amr al-Damri, who had previously incited his tribe against the Prophet during the Waddan Campaign, approached the Prophet. He asked if the Prophet was waiting to confront the Quraysh at that water. The Prophet confirmed, offering reconciliation if he wished. Makhshi refused, claiming they had no need for his offer. Meanwhile, the Prophet continued to wait for Abu Sufyan.
Poetic Encounter with Ma'bad bin Abi Ma'bad
As the Prophet awaited Abu Sufyan, Ma'bad bin Abi Ma'bad al-Khuzai passed by him. Ma'bad had already seen the Prophet and his camel earlier and composed verses on it, expressing his apprehension and likening the sight to a calamity. He recited verses from Ibn Rawaha and Hassaan to honor the awaited encounter with Abu Sufyan.

Translation:
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) returned to Al-Madinah and resided there for several months until the month of Dhul-Hijjah came. The polytheists performed the pilgrimage that year, which was the fourth year after the Prophet's migration to Al-Madinah. Al-Waqidi claimed that during this expedition, the Battle of Badr took place on the 17th of Dhul-Qa'dah, forty-five months after the Hijrah. The Prophet went out with 1,500 of his companions. Musa ibn 'Uqbah narrated that it happened in Sha'ban, which is the most authentic opinion, and Allah knows best.
Al-Hasan ibn Thabit said:
Leave the caravans from Syria untouched
For they are now hindered
By a scourge like the mouths of laboring camels
Carried by men who migrated to their Lord
Along with their true supporters and the hands of angels
If you take the path towards Ghor from Al-Batin
Tell them the way is not there
We stood at the edge of the dripping spear
With forty of us wide, armed warriors
Each of us equal to fifty men
Our heads touching the clouds of battle
You see the common sunken land scattered
On the thin, soft-hoofed mounts
If we meet in our encircling and our searching
Farat ibn Hayyan will be a cause of destruction
Or Qais ibn 'Amr after him
Darkening further an already dark complexion
Send Aba Sufyan a message about me
For you are known for the mischief of cunning men
