Chapter on the Number of Polytheists who Marched to Badr

Reported to us by Abu Muhammad Abdallah ibn Yusuf al-Asbahani, who narrated from Abu Saeed ibn al-A'arabi, who said: Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Za'faranu informed us, saying: Amr ibn Muhammad al-Anqazi told us, who said: Israel narrated to us from Abu Ishaq, who heard it from Haritha ibn Mudarib, who heard it from Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "We captured two men on the day of Badr, one was an Arab and the other a slave. The Arab escaped, and we took the slave named Mawla to Ubayy ibn Abi Mu'ayt. He said, 'Their number is many, and their strength is severe.' So we beat him until we brought him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He refused to inform him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked, 'How many camels do you sacrifice daily?' He replied, 'Ten.' The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'For every group of ten camels, one thousand people.'

Additional Narration

It was reported to us by Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, who narrated from Abu al-Abbas, known as al-Asamm, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar told us, who said: Yunus narrated from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Yazid ibn Ruman informed me that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, approached Badr, he sent Ali ibn Abi Talib, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and Zubayr ibn al-Awwam with a group of his companions to gather intelligence. They intercepted water carriers from the Quraysh fetching water for Banu Saeed ibn al-A'as, 'they sought intelligence.' (As mentioned in different variations of the text)

The Messenger of Allah Visits Banu Al-Hajjaj

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was informed about two young boys belonging to Banu Al-Hajjaj. He inquired about the number of people among them and how many animals they slaughtered daily. Finding out that they were between a thousand and nine hundred, and they slaughtered ten animals one day and nine the next, he asked if there were any nobles of Quraysh among them. They mentioned Utbah and Shaybah. The Prophet then addressed the people and declared that Makkah now belonged to them, saying, “It has thrown out every fragment of its liver towards you."
