Chapter on the Expedition of Dhi Qarad

Reported to us by Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, who said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub informed us, who said: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar told us, who said: Yunus ibn Bukayr reported from Ibn Ishaq that "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed in Al-Madinah for six months after his return from Badr. Then he sent Zaid ibn Harithah to Dhi al-Qassah where they intercepted a caravan of the Quraysh led by Abu Sufyan, carrying water from the wells of Najd. The Quraysh, fearing the road they used to travel towards Syria after the Battle of Badr had changed, decided to take the route towards Iraq. Among them were merchants including Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, carrying a large amount of silver which was significant for their trade. They hired a guide named Furat ibn Hayyan from Bakr ibn Wa'il to lead them on their way. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Zaid and he met them at that water. They captured the caravan along with its contents, and when the men fled, Zaid brought it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Hassan ibn Thabit composed verses about this event, including:

"Let the caravans of Sham be stopped, for a severe pain has struck them, resembling the pains of a woman in labor. By the hands of men migrating towards their Lord, and surely His helpers, and the hands of angels."

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, saying:

Abu Abdullah Al-Asbahani informed us, saying:

Al-Hasan ibn Al-Jahm informed us, saying:

Al-Husayn ibn Al-Faraj informed us, saying:

Muhammad ibn Umar Al-Waqidi informed us, saying:

"The expedition of Al-Qardah, its leader was Zaid ibn Harithah, set out in the last days of Jumada al-Akhirah for twenty-eight months."

Al-Waqidi said: "Al-Qardah is a water source in Najd."

Al-Waqidi continued: "Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan ibn Usamah ibn Zaid narrated from his people, saying: 'The Quraysh had blocked the route to Sham, so they consulted Safwan ibn Umayyah and he guided them to Furat ibn Hayyan, who said: "I will guide you on the road to Iraq." Safwan prepared and sent Quraish men with goods. They departed in a caravan and reached Al-Madinah, where Nuaym ibn Mas'ud Al-Ashja'i, who was following his tribe's religion, hosted them. They met Kinanah ibn Abu Al-Huqaiq of Banu Nadir, and drank together. Salit ibn Al-Nu'man, who had become a Muslim, was there when wine was not forbidden. Nuaym mentioned Safwan's departure with his caravan and the wealth he had. Salit hurried to the Prophet, and informed him. Zaid ibn Harithah was then sent with a hundred riders who intercepted the caravan. They seized the goods, captured one or two men, and brought the caravan to the Prophet. He took a fifth, valued at twenty thousand dirhams, and distributed the rest amongst the members of the expedition. Furat ibn Hayyan was among the captives, and when asked to convert, he accepted Islam and was released from being killed.'"

When you head to the Ghawr from Batn Al-'Aj, then say: The path is not there.

The report is found in the biography of Ibn Hisham (2: 429-430).

In some versions, "left" is used instead of "left it." The report is found in Al-Waqidi's Battles (1: 197-198).
