Chapter: The Arrival of Zaid ibn Harithah and Abdullah ibn Rawahah to the People of Madinah as Bearers of the Good News of the Victory of Badr
Informed us Abu Al-Hasan Al-Muqri', who reported that Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq informed us, who reported that Yusuf ibn Ya'qub informed us, who reported that Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr informed us, who reported from Amr ibn Asim, who reported from Hammad ibn Salamah, who reported from Hisham ibn Uruwah, who reported from his father, who reported from Usamah ibn Zaid that “the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, appointed Uthman ibn Affan and Usamah ibn Zaid to look after Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the days of Badr.”
Zaid ibn Harithah of the Banu Sharaheel clan, the noble martyrly prince mentioned in Surah Al-Ahzab, also known as Abu Usamah Al-Kalbi then Al-Muhammadi, the leader of the freedmen, preceded them in embracing Islam. He loved the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, more than anyone else did. Allah Most High only mentioned him and Prophet Isa bin Maryam in His Book by name as companions, the one who brings just rulings and will join the merciful nation in its prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, marriage, and all the decrees of the upright religion. Just as Abu Al-Qasim is the leader of the Prophets, the best among them, and the seal of Prophethood, likewise, Isa will be the best of this nation overall after his descent, and will be their finality. No one better than him will come after, as the sun will rise from its setting point, and Allah will allow the Hour to draw near.
Al-Waqidi said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, appointed Zaid as a leader over the people in the battle of Mu'tah and put him ahead of the commanders. When the two armies clashed, the commanders fought while on horseback. Zaid took the banner and fought, with the people fighting alongside him until he was killed by a spear, may Allah be pleased with him. The Messenger of Allah prayed for him and said, "Seek forgiveness for your brother who has entered Paradise while he is striving."

Story of the Camel of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
The she-camel of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was called Al-Adbaa. Usamah narrated, "I heard the noise and went out to find Zaid bringing the glad tidings. I did not believe until I saw the prisoners, then the Messenger of Allah shot an arrow for Uthman."
Transmission of the Hadith
Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz reported that Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Buttah Al-Asbahani narrated to us. Al-Hasan bin Al-Jahm informed us that Al-Husayn bin Al-Faraj narrated to him from Al-Waqidi, saying that the Messenger of Allah prayed, returning from Badr at Al-Uthayl. Following his smile, he mentioned seeing the Angel Mikail with dusty wings who informed him of his acceptance to return.
Arrival of Zaid and Abdallah
Zaid bin Haritha and Abdallah bin Rawaha arrived from Al-Uthayl with provisions in Jamadi Al-Awwal in the year 8 AH, Zaid being fifty-five years old. Ismail bin Abi Khalid, Abu Ishaq, and Abu Maisara noted that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, reached the news of the deaths of Zaid, Ja'far, and Ibn Rawaha, he prayed for their forgiveness, starting with Zaid.

Events of the Day of Sunday
On Sunday at dawn, Abdullah bin Rawahah bid farewell to Zaid bin Harithah at Al-Aqiq. Abdullah then called out to his mount, saying:
O people of Ansar, rejoice in the safety of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and the killing and capture of the polytheists: Rabi'ah's son, Al-Hajjaj's son, Abu Jahl, Zam'ah bin Al-Aswad, Umair bin Khalaf, Suhail bin Amr was captured, and Aasim bin Adi. I went to him and directed him, asking: Is what you say correct, O Ibn Rawahah? He replied: Yes, by Allah, tomorrow the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, will arrive with prisoners, tied together, following the tracks of Ansars, giving them glad tidings house by house. The children would gather with him, saying: Abu Jahl, the transgressor, has been killed, until he reached Banu Umayyah bin Zaid.
Harithah then rode the Prophet's she-camel, Al-Qaswa, to deliver the news to the people of Madinah. When he reached the praying area, he shouted from his mount:
Utbah, Shaibah, sons of Rabi'ah, sons of Al-Hajjaj, Abu Jahl, Abu Al-Bakhtari, Zam'ah bin Al-Aswad, Umair bin Khalaf, Suhail bin Amr were captured, and Dhul Anayb had many captives. People began to doubt Zaid bin Harithah, saying that he was only spreading lies, until the Muslims became angry and afraid.
Account of Zaid's Arrival at Rawdah
When they arrived at Ruqayyah bint the Messenger of Allah's gravesite at Al-Baqi', a hypocrite told Usamah bin Zaid:
Your companion and his followers were killed.
Another hypocrite remarked to Abu Lubabah bin Abdul Mundhir:
Your companions have dispersed irreversibly, and Ali's family has been killed. Muhammad's camel is recognized, and Zaid seems bewildered, speaking in terror, spreading lies.
Abu Lubabah replied:
May Allah Almighty refute your claim.
The Jews said that only falsehood comes from Zaid.

Conversation between Usama ibn Zayd and his father
Usama ibn Zayd narrated: "I went to be alone with my father and asked him, 'O my father, do you think what you say is right?' He replied, 'By Allah, yes, O my son.' I became upset and went to that hypocrite and said, 'You are slandering the Messenger of Allah and the Muslims. I will take you to the Messenger of Allah when he returns so he may punish you.' He replied, 'O Abu Muhammad, it is something I have heard people saying.'
The captives and the role of the Prophet
They brought the captives, including Shuqran, the servant of the Prophet, who were forty-nine men, though originally they were seventy. The Prophet utilized Shuqran, a young page of the Prophet who had participated in the Battle of Badr but was not freed on that day. People congratulated Shuqran on his victory, but he faced insults, with some showing hostility towards him.
Meeting with Usaid ibn Hudayr
Usaid ibn Hudayr met the Prophet and praised him, expressing regret for missing the Battle of Badr. The Prophet appreciated his sincerity, saying, 'You speak the truth.' Then, it was mentioned how Najashi acted when he learned of the Quraysh casualties at Badr. This account has been narrated with a different chain of transmission.

Translation of a Classical Arabic Text
Al-Mubarak reported that Abdul Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir narrated from Abdul Rahman, a man from the people of San‘a, who said: "On a certain day, Al-Najashi sent for Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib and his companions. They entered upon him while he was in a house sitting on the ground. Ja‘far took pity on us when he saw us in that state. When he saw the expressions on our faces, he said, 'I bring you good news that will make you happy. News has reached me from your land of a spring. It informed me that Allah has granted victory to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and has destroyed his enemy. So and so have been captured, and so and so have been killed. The righteous were victorious in a valley called Badr with many palm trees, as if I can see it; for I used to graze the camels of my master from the Banu Dhamrah tribe there.' Ja‘far asked him, 'Why are you sitting on the ground without a mat beneath you, and you possess these noble manners?' He replied, 'We find in what Allah revealed to Jesus, peace be upon him, that it is the right of Allah's servants to show humility to Allah when He shows them His blessings. When Allah granted me victory for His Prophet, I showed this humility.'"
