Bab: Number of People Who Were With the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Hudaybiyyah
Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yusuf al-Asbahaani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us that Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Basri in Makkah informed us that Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Za'faraani informed him that Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated from Az-Zuhri from Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr from Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) left in the year of Hudaybiyyah with about one thousand of his companions. When they reached Dhul Hulayfah, he performed the rite of qasr, shaved his head, and put on the ihram garment which indicated that he was in a state of ihram.
Imam Al-Bukhari reported this authentic hadith from Ali ibn Al-Madeeni from Ibn Uyaynah.
The narrators differed regarding the exact number of people mentioned in this hadith, with some stating it was one thousand and three hundred.
- (Dhul Hulayfah) is a village located six miles away from Madinah.
- (He performed the rite of qasr) - he attached a piece of rope to his neck to show it was a sacrificial animal, so people would refrain from it.
- (Reported by Al-Bukhari in Al-Maghazi in the chapter of Hudaybiyyah, Fath Al-Bari 7:444).
In his work on Sham history, As-Salehi mentioned that narrations differed about the number of individuals present with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), with Abdul Aziz Al-Afaqee reporting from Az-Zuhri in the hadith of Al-Miswar and Marwan stating it was one thousand and eight hundred.

Various Narrations on the Number of Participants in an Expedition
In a narration from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from Al-Bara': "We were fourteen hundred." In another narration from Zuhair bin Mu'awiya, from Abu Ishaq, they were "a thousand four hundred or more." In a narration from Salim bin Abi Al-Ja'd, from Jabir: "They were five hundred," as well as in narrations from Saeed bin Al-Musayyib and Ibn Abi Shaybah from Majma` bin Jariyah. Al-Hafiz remarked that the collective between these differences indicates they were over fourteen hundred. Those who said fifteen hundred attracted the consonantal change, while those who said fourteen hundred dismissed it.
Al-Bara' mentioned in a narration attributed to him: "We were a thousand four hundred or more," and Imam Nawawi relied on this collective. Al-Bayhaqi leaned towards the narration which stated a thousand four hundred as more authentic. He narrated through the routes of Abu Al-Zubayr and Sufyan bin 'Umrah bin Dinar, both from Jabir. Also, through a narration from Mu'qal bin Yasar, from Salamah bin Al-Akwa`, Al-Bara' bin Azib, and through the route of Qatadah from Sa`eed bin Al-Musayyib from his father, with most of these routes traced back to Muslim.
Ibn Sa`ad mentioned in the hadith of Mu'qal bin Yasar: "Around a thousand four hundred," without specifying. Abdullah bin Abi Awfa mentioned, "We were a thousand three hundred," as narrated by Al-Bukhari, and this number might include an increase witnessed by others. The additional numbers could be from followers like servants, women, and young children who were not accountable.
Ibn Ishaq's statement of seven hundred did not find agreement from anyone, as it was a deduction from Jabir's statement that they slaughtered seventy camels, but it does not mean they only slaughtered camels. Some of them were not even in the state of Ihram. Ibn Al-Qayyim stated that Ibn Ishaq's mention was clearly incorrect, as he inferred it from the slaughter of seventy camels, but this does not imply they only slaughtered the camels. Ibn Ishaq had earlier stated that the camels slaughtered were seventy, indicating that not all of them took part. Towards the end of the same hadith, he explicitly mentioned that they were a thousand four hundred. The narration from Al-Miswar and Marwan via Al-Bukhari, mentioning that they set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was around twelve hundred, which aligns with those who pledged allegiance. Those additional were absent, like those who accompanied 'Uthman to Makkah, given that "a dozen" could also refer to five.

Hadith Narrations Regarding the Pledge of Ridwan
First Narration
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Furak, may Allah have mercy on him, informed us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Ahmad al-Asbahani told us that Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us that Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi informed us that Shu'bah told him that Amr reported to him that he heard Ibn Abi Awfa, the companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying that they were twelve hundred on that day, and the most deserving to embrace Islam on that day were the eight Emigrants.
Second Narration
Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan reported to us that Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Durustawayh informed us that Ya'qub ibn Sufyan narrated to us that Ubaydullah ibn Mu'adh relayed from his father who narrated from Shubah about Amr ibn Murrah that he heard Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa say that the people of the tree were 1,300, and the most deserving to embrace Islam were the eight Emigrants. This hadith is reported by Muslim in Sahih, through Ubaydallah ibn Mu'adh, from Muhammad ibn Muthanna, from Abu Dawud.
Ibn Uqbah asserted that they were 1,600 in number, while in a narration from Salamah ibn al-Akwa' through Ibn Abi Shaybah, they are reported to be 1,700. Ibn Sa'd mentioned that they were 1,525. This discrepancy was addressed by Ibn Mardawayh in relation to Ibn Abbas, refuting Ibn Dahiyyah who claimed that the variance in their numbers was due to the lack of precision in reporting, as it was based on guesswork.

Hadith on the Conquest of Hudaybiyyah
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah: “Had we been one hundred thousand, we would have been satisfied.” (Muslim) This summarises the authentic hadith regarding the Well of Hudaybiyyah. When the companions reached Hudaybiyyah and found its well to be as dry as a bone, the Prophet (peace be upon him) spat into it, supplicated for its water to be blessed, and miraculously, the water gushed forth. Jabir narrated: “We were one thousand four hundred companions at that time, and had we been one hundred thousand, we would still have been satisfied.” (Muslim)
Cited in Sahih Muslim, Book of Leadership, Hadith 73, narrated by Rifaa ibn Al-Haytham, through Khalid Al-Tahhan, from Huthayf, from Salim ibn Abi Al-Ja’d. (1484)
For further reference, see Fath al-Bari (7:441) regarding the Expedition of Hudaybiyyah, and Muslim (3:1484), Hadith 72. (Muslim)

Transmission of Ahadith
In the narration, it was also reported from Qutaibah, from Jarir. Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abu Tahir Ad-Daqqaaq in Baghdad informed us, saying: Abu Al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Sulaiman Al-Kharqiyy informed us, saying: Abu Qilabah informed us, saying: Sa'id ibn Ar-Rabee' Abu Zaid Al-Harawi informed us, saying: Qura ibn Khalid informed us, from Qatadah, who said: I asked Sa'id ibn Al-Musayyib, "How many people were present at the Pledge of Ridwan?" He said, "Fifteen hundred." I said, "What about Jabir ibn Abdullah?" He said, "They were fourteen hundred." Then he (May Allah have mercy on him) said, "He informed me that they were fifteen hundred." This was reported by Al-Bukhari from the hadith of Ibn Abi Aroobah, from Qatadah, and he authenticated it through the narration of Qura ibn Khalid, which indicates that in the past they used to say fifteen hundred, then he mentioned the doubt and said, "Fourteen hundred."
Pledge of Ridwan Count
Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yusuf Al-Asbahan informed us, saying: Abu Sa'id Al-Basri informed us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad Az-Zafarani informed us, saying: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah informed us, that Amr ibn Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: "We were 1,400 on the Day of Hudaybiyyah when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to us, 'You are the best people on earth,' and had I seen you in the place of the tree."
Authentic Narration
Abu Muhammad Al-Hafiz informed us, saying: Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub informed us, saying: Ar-Rabi' ibn Sulaiman informed us, saying: Ash-Shafi'i informed us, saying: Sufyan reported from Amr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, and mentioned it. They both reported it in Sahih from the hadith of Sufyan ibn Uyaynah. (Fath Al-Bari [7:443], Hadith no. 4153 and 4154)

The camel's share was divided among seven, so we asked Jabir: How many of you were there that day? He replied: A thousand and four hundred, along with our horses and men. This narration is more authentic, as mentioned by al-Bara' ibn Azib, Ma'qil ibn Yasar, and Salamah ibn al-Akwa', in the most authentic narrations from him.
