Chapter on the Man Who Informed the Prophet (PBUH) that He is of the People of Hellfire and What Happened to Him

Abu 'Amr al-Adibi informed us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Isma'iliy informed us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Sufyan and Al-Qasim said: Muhammad ibn As-Sabbaah informed us, saying: 'Abdul-'Aziz ibn Abi Hazim informed us, saying: My father narrated to us from Sahl ibn Sa'd that during one of the Prophet's (PBUH) expeditions, he encountered the polytheists in battle. Every group went to their respective armies. Among the Muslims was a man who spared no polytheist, no matter how insignificant, but that he sought him out with his sword. The question arose, "O Messenger of Allah, no one has fought as fiercely today as so-and-so!" He said, "Indeed, he is of the people of Hellfire," which greatly surprised the people. They asked, "If so-and-so is of the people of Hellfire, then who among us is of Paradise?" A man exclaimed, "By Allah, he will never die upon this condition," and he charged into battle, his swiftness increasing each time until he eventually injured himself severely. As his wounds intensified and he longed for death, he dropped his weapon and allowed a fly to settle on his chest. He then hurled himself onto his own sword, taking his life. Another man went to the Prophet (PBUH) and bore witness to his prophethood. The Prophet (PBUH) asked why, and the man informed him of what had transpired with the aforementioned individual. The Prophet (PBUH) explained that the man had performed the deeds of the people of Paradise outwardly, but his ultimate fate was that of the people of Hellfire. Likewise, he had displayed the deeds of the people of Hellfire outwardly, but he was among the people of Paradise.

Hadith about a Man who Committed Suicide

Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih on the authority of Abdullah bin Maslamah, from Ibn Abi Hazim. He and Muslim also reported it from the hadith of Ya'qub bin Abdur-Rahman, from Abu Hazim.

Testimony of Abu Huraira

Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, saying: Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Abdus narrated to us, who said: Usman bin Sa'id informed us, saying: I read to Abi al-Yaman that Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamza narrated to him. Abu al-Fadl bin Abi Sa'd al-Harawi told us: A pilgrim visited us twice and reported to us, narrated to us Ali bin Muhammad bin Isa, who said: Abu al-Yaman told us that Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamza narrated from Az-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib, that Abu Huraira said:

"I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) the Battle of Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said about a man who was said to be a Muslim: 'This (man) is one of the inhabitants of the Hellfire.' When the battle started, the man fought fiercely that he covered himself with wounds. The man was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ), who said about him: 'Truly, he is one of the inhabitants of the Hellfire.' Some people doubted this. However, while the man was suffering from his wounds, he took his own life by hastening his death. Some Muslims approached the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the person you mentioned as a dweller of Hell committed suicide.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Bilal, stand up and announce: None shall enter Jannah except a believer, and Allah supports His religion with a sinful man.'"

This hadith is narrated by Imam al-Bukhari in Sahih from Abu al-Yaman, and it was followed by Ma'mar from Az-Zuhri.

Translation of the Classical Arabic Text

I said: And from this perspective, he mentioned it, and Yunus said, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, on the authority of Sa'id. And in the end of this hadith, it is like an evidence that a person considers permissible to kill themselves or the Messenger of Allah knows hypocrisy from them. We ask Allah for a good outcome.
