Chapter on the Islam of Amr ibn al-As and Signs of the Prophet's Truthfulness in the Message

It was narrated to us by Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz who said: It was narrated to us by Abu Abdullah al-Isbahani who said, that Al-Hasan ibn al-Jahm narrated to us, saying: Al-Husayn ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, saying: Al-Waqidi informed us, saying: We were informed by Abdul-Hameed ibn Ja'far, from his father who said: "Amr ibn al-As said: 'I used to oppose and resist Islam. I participated in the Battle of Badr with the polytheists and was saved. Then I participated in the Battle of Uhud and was saved. Then I participated in the Battle of the Trench and was saved. I said to myself: How would Allah make Muhammad prevail over the Quraysh to the extent that I would join my people in exile and distance myself from meeting them'.

When the treaty of Hudaybiyyah came, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, returned in peace, and the Quraysh returned to Mecca. I said to myself: 'Muhammad will enter Mecca victoriously with his companions. Mecca is not a hospitable place, nor is Ta'if, and there is nothing better than leaving. Even though I was still hesitant about Islam, had the Quraysh accepted Islam, I would not have embraced it.' I went to Mecca and gathered men from my tribe who valued my opinion and listened to me. I asked them: 'How am I among you?' They replied: 'You are our leader and guide us in everything that benefits us'."

Conversation with the Negus

The Narrator said: I said, "Do you know that I swear by Allah, I do not see the matter of Muhammad as a matter that brings evil high above everything." They said, "What is it?" He replied, "We will go to the Negus and join him. If Muhammad appears, we were with the Negus, and we preferred to be under the Negus rather than under the hand of Muhammad. But if Quraish appears, we who know them." They said, "This is the opinion." He said, "Offer him what you have and what will please him the most that we offer him is the land of Ethiopia. So, we gathered a lot of gifts and set out until we reached the Negus. By Allah, we curse you when Amr bin Umaya Ad-Damri came to him, the Messenger of Allah sent him with a letter to marry him to Umm Habibah, the daughter of Abu Sufyan, and he went in and then came out from him. I tell my friends, 'This is Amr bin Umaya. If I had entered upon the Negus, I would have asked him and he would have granted me, then I would have killed him.' If I had done that, Quraysh would be relieved, and I would have been rid of them when I said the Messenger of Muhammad. So I entered upon the Negus and prostrated as I used to do, and he said, 'Welcome, my friend! Have you brought me gifts from your land?' I said, 'Yes, O King, I brought you many gifts.' Then I presented them to him, which pleased him, so he separated some things from them and accepted the rest, and put them in a safe place to be preserved. When I saw his satisfaction, I said, 'O King, I have seen a man who left you, he is an enemy messenger to us. He has attacked us, killed our nobles and elite. Give him to me so I may kill him.' The Negus got angry and raised his hand and hit me on my nose so hard that I thought he broke it. I was outraged and wanted to retaliate, but I restrained myself to avoid causing a rift, and exited in disgrace."

Conversion to Islam

After declaring his faith in Muhammad (peace be upon him), Al-Najashi, the king of Abyssinia, was baptized, cleansed from blood, and clothed by the companions of the Prophet. His companions were astonished by his conversion and expressed their approval. Al-Najashi then set out to join the Muslim community in Yathrib (Al-Madinah).

En route to Yathrib

During his journey to Yathrib, Al-Najashi stopped at a well where he encountered Khalid ibn Al-Walid. Khalid informed him about the spread of Islam and the strong impact it had on the people. Al-Najashi expressed his desire to embrace Islam and reached Yathrib under the escort of Uthman ibn Talha.

Quickly, I thought that he was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, coming to us. What I had thought was true, and we met at Harrah. We wore clean clothes and were called to pray Asr. We set off until we saw him. His face was beaming with happiness, and the Muslims around him were delighted with our Islam. Khalid ibn Al-Walid stepped forward and pledged allegiance. Then, Uthman ibn Talha stepped forward and pledged allegiance. I also stepped forward. By Allah, I could not but sit in front of him with shyness preventing me from lifting my eyes towards him. I pledged allegiance to him, seeking forgiveness for my past sins, not knowing what the future holds. He replied, "Islam erases what came before it, and Hijrah (migration for the sake of Allah) erases what came before it." By Allah, neither the Messenger of Allah nor Khalid ibn Al-Walid ever found fault with me over any matter since we embraced Islam. We were at the same status in Abu Bakr's presence when these events occurred, and I was the same in Umar's eyes. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would give Khalid advice, and Abdullah bin Ja'far said, 'I mentioned this hadith to Yazid bin Abi Habib, who informed me that Rashid, slave of Habib bin Abu Uwais Al-Thaqafi, relayed it from Habib, from Amr or similar.' I then asked Yazid, 'Were you aware of when Amr and Khalid arrived?' He replied, 'No, but I heard that it was before the conquest.' I said, 'My father informed me that Amr, Khalid, and Uthman ibn Talha arrived in Madinah in the month of Safar, eight years ago.' This information was narrated to us by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Al-Hasan Al-Qadi. They said, 'We were told by Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, who reported from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar, who was informed by Yunus bin Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq, who relayed from Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Rashid, slave of Habib, from Habib bin Abu Aws, who said, "I was informed by Amr bin al-As who said, 'When we returned from Khandaq, I gathered men from Quraysh and remarked.'"

The Meeting with the Negus of Abyssinia

The matter of Muhammad is gaining disapproval, and by God, there is nothing to challenge him. I have seen something, and I don't know your opinion about it. They asked me, “What is it?” So I said, “I think we should go to the Negus on our side, so if our people are victorious, we can return to them, and if Muhammad appears among them, we would rather be under the Negus than under Muhammad.” They agreed with me, and I suggested that they offer gifts to the Negus. We collected many valuable gifts and set out until we reached him. We met with him alongside Amr ibn Umaya al-Damri, who was sent by the Messenger of Allah to the Negus regarding Ja'far and his companions. When I saw him, I told my companion that if I had presented these gifts to him and then asked him to hand over Muhammad to me, I would have struck his neck. When Quraysh saw that I had settled the matter for them by killing the Messenger of Muhammad, I entered upon the Negus. He greeted me warmly and asked if I had brought him anything. I replied in the affirmative and presented the gifts to him. He was pleased with them and accepted them. I then said to him, “O King, I have seen the Messenger of Muhammad coming to you. He is a man who has turned us against each other, killed our nobles and best among us. Give him to me so I can strike his neck.” The Negus became extremely angry, raised his hand, and struck himself on the nose so forcefully that I thought he had broken it. I said to him, “O King, if you dislike this, I wouldn’t ask you for it.” He replied, “Do you ask me for the killing of a man whom the greatest of laws come to? I said, “O King, indeed that is the case.” He said, “Yes, by Allah. Woe to you, O Amr, indeed I advise you to follow him and submit with him. By Allah, he and his followers will prevail over those who oppose them, just as Moses prevailed over Pharaoh and his army.” I said, “O King, pledge allegiance to him on behalf of Islam.” He agreed, extended his hand, and I gave him my allegiance to the Messenger of Allah for Islam. I then went back to my companions, and they asked me what had happened. I replied, “It is good.” When the evening came, I sat at [ (9) ] in the palm of his hand. Encounter with Khalid ibn al-Walid

On my mount I rode away from them, and I swear by Allah that I leaned towards meeting Khalid ibn al-Walid. When I saw him, I asked, "Where are you, Aba Suleiman?" He replied, "I swear by Allah, I am on the path to embrace Islam. By Allah, he has become steadfast in his faith. Indeed, this man is of such prophetic character that I have no doubts about him." I asserted, "By Allah, I have come only because I am Muslim for we have given allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in Medina." Khalid stepped forward and pledged his allegiance. Then I stepped forward, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, I pledge allegiance to you on condition that my past sins are forgiven, without mentioning what lies ahead." He responded to me, "O Amr, pledge allegiance, for Islam erases what precedes it, and migration erases what precedes it."

The saying “(He has become steadfast) like the firmly-in-place arrowhead” means: the matter has become clear and unambiguous, with no remaining confusion or doubt. Narrated by Ibn Hisham in the biography.
