Chapter on the Killing of Ibn Nubayh al-Hudhali and the Prophetic Indications in that

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Ja'far Al-Baghdadi informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Khalid reported to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Ibn Lahia narrated to us, saying: Abu Al-Aswad reported from Urwah, who said: The Messenger of Allah peace be upon him sent Abdullah ibn Unais Al-Salami to Sufyan ibn Khalid Al-Hudhali, then to Al-Lihyani to kill him while he was in 'Urnah in the valley of Makkah.

And Abu Al-Husayn ibn Al-Fadl Al-Qattan in Baghdad reported to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn 'Attab informed us. He said: Al-Qasim ibn Abdullah ibn Al-Mughirah narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi [he is Abdullah ibn Unais ibn Asad ibn Haram ibn Habib ibn Malik ibn Ghannam, who participated in the battles of Badr and Uhud and those after them and has a mention in Asad Al-Ghaba, and Ibn Hajar mentioned in Al-Isabah: "The Prophet peace be upon him sent him to kill Ibn Nubayh al-Hudhali alone, then he entered Egypt and went to Africa."]

Al-Jahiz said in Al-Bayan and At-Tabyin: "Among what indicates their approval of the matter of Al-Mukhasirah is the hadith of Abdullah ibn Unais Al-Mukhasirah, who was the companion of the Jurhumiyya night and the Prophet - peace be upon him - gave him Al-Mukhasirah and said: 'You will meet me in Paradise.'"

بَابُ قَتْلِ ابْنِ نُبَيْحٍ الْهُذَلِيِّ، ومَا ظَهَرَ فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ آثَارِ النُّبُوَّةِ بِوُجُودِ الصِّدْقِ فِي خَبَرِهِأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُنَيْسٍ [ (١) ] السَّلَمِيَّ إِلَى سُفْيَانَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْهُذَلِيِّ، ثُمَّ اللِّحْيَانِيِّ لِيَقْتُلَهُ وَهُوَ بِعُرَنَةِ [ (٢) ] وَادِي مَكَّةَ.وأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ بِبَغْدَادَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَتَّابٍ. قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي[ (١) ] هُوَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أنيس بن أسعد بن حرام بن حبيب بن مالك بن غنم شهد بدرا وأحدا وما بعدهما وله ترجمة في أسد الغابة (٣: ١١٩) ، وقال ابن حجر في الإصابة (٢: ٢٧٨) : «بَعَثَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى ابْنِ نبيح العتري وحده فقتله، ودخل مصر، وخرج الى افريقية» .وقال الجاحظ في البيان والتبيين (٣: ١١) : «ومما يدلك على استحسانهم شأن المخصرة:حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أنيس ذي المخصرة، وهو صاحب ليلة الجهني وكان النبي- عليه السلام- أعطاه مخصرة، وقال: تلقاني في الجنة.»[ (٢) ] (عرنة) : موضع بقرب عرفة موقف الحجيج، وانظر معجم ما استعجم (٣: ٩٣٥) مادة عرنة، و (٤: ١١٩) مادة محسر.

Translation of Classical Islamic Arabic Text

Oweis narrated: Isma'il ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Uqba informed us, from Musa ibn 'Uqba, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent 'Abdullah ibn Unais al-Salami to Sufyan ibn 'Abdullah ibn Nubayh al-Hudhali, then to al-Lihyani while he was in 'Uranah behind Makkah or at 'Arafat. People gathered to support the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in a battle against them, and he ordered 'Abdullah to kill Sufyan.

'Abdullah asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about how he should approach Sufyan, and the Prophet replied, "When you see him, frighten him." 'Abdullah then approached the people and persuaded them. He informed them what Sufyan intended to do, and then he met Sufyan while he was walking in 'Uranah with the al-Ahabish from the outskirts of Makkah following him. 'Abdullah, upon seeing him, frightened him and then moved away saying, "Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth." When the people quieted down, he deceived Sufyan and killed him.

It is claimed that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was informed of Sufyan's killing before the arrival of 'Abdullah ibn Unais.

Musa said: "It is mentioned, and Allah knows best, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave 'Abdullah a stick and said, 'Shrink it with it, or hold on to it.' And it remained with him until they claimed that the Prophet ordered him to use it, and it was placed in his shroud, between his skin and his clothes."

We do not know whether the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Ibn Unais to Ibn Nubayh from Madinah or elsewhere. This wording is from Musa ibn 'Uqba's narration, and it does not include the story of the stick.

أُوَيْسٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، قَالَ: وَبَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُنَيْسٍ السَّلَمِيَّ، إِلَى سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عبد الله ابن نُبَيْحٍ الْهُذَلِيِّ، ثُمَّ اللِّحْيَانِيِّ وَهُوَ بِعُرَنَةَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ مَكَّةَ، أَوْ بِعَرَفَةَ، قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ لِيَغْزُوَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِهِمْ، وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَقْتُلَهُ.قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا نَحْوُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ [انْعَتْهُ لِي] قَالَ إِذَا رأيته هبته. وفرقت مِنْهُ. قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَمَا فَرِقْتُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَطُّ.فَانْطَلَقَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَتَوصَّلُ بِالنَّاسِ، وَيَعْتَزِي إِلَى خُزَاعَةَ، وَيُخْبِرُ مَنْ لَقِيَ أَنَّمَا يُرِيدُ سُفْيَانَ لِيَكُونَ مَعَهُ، فَلَقِيَ سُفْيَانَ وَهُوَ يَمْشِي بِبَطْنِ عُرَنَةَ وَوَرَاءَهُ الْأَحَابِيشُ [ (٣) ] مِنْ حَاضِرَةِ مَكَّةَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُ، هِبْتُهُ وَفَرِقْتُ مِنْهُ فَقُلْتُ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ كَمَنْتُ لَهُ، حَتَّى إِذَا هَدَأَ النَّاسُ، اغررته [ (٤) ] فَقَتَلْتُهُ.فَيَزْعُمُونَ أَنْ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُخْبِرَ بِقَتْلِهِ قَبْلَ قُدُومِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أُنَيْسٍ.قَالَ مُوسَى: وَذَكَرُوا، وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْطَاهُ عَصًا [ (٥) ] فَقَالَ: تَخَصَّرْ بِهَا، أَوْ أَمْسِكْهَا. فَكَانَتْ عِنْدَهُ حَتَّى زَعَمُوا [ (٦) ] حَتَّى أَمَرَ بِهَا فَجُعِلَتْ فِي كَفَنِهِ، بَيْنَ جِلْدِهِ وَثِيَابِهِ.وَلَا نَدْرِي مِنْ أَيْنَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عليه وسلم ابْنَ أُنَيْسٍ إِلَى ابْنِ نُبَيْحٍ أَمِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَمْ مِنْ غَيْرِهَا.هَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، وَلَيْسَ فِي رِوَايَةِ عُرْوَةَ قصة العصا [ (٧) ] .[ (٣) ] الأحابيش: أحياء من القارة انصحوا إلى بني ليث في محاربتهم قرينا والتحبش: التجمع.[ (٤) ] (اغتررته) أخذته في غفلة.[ (٥) ] رسمت في (أ) و (ح) : «عصى» .[ (٦) ] في (ص) : «فَكَانَتْ عِنْدَهُ حَتَّى زَعَمُوا» .[ (٧) ] أشار إلى رِوَايَةِ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ: ابن سيد الناس في عيون الأثر (٢: ٥٥) ، وابن كثير في التاريخ (٤: ١٤١) ، والصالحي (٥: ٥٧) ، وأبو نعيم في الدلائل (٤٥١) .

Hadith Narration: The Prophet's Encounter with Ibn Nubayh al-Hudhali

Abu Nasr ibn Qatada informed us that Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Saad al-Hafidh narrated to us, saying: Ibn Ibrahim al-Abdi informed us that al-Nufayli reported to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Salama narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us from Abdullah ibn Abd Allah ibn Unays, from his father Abd Allah ibn Unays, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: 'It has reached me that Ibn Nubayh al-Hudhali is gathering people to attack me, while he is at his palm grove [or in a certain location]. So go to him and kill him.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, describe him to me so that I may recognize him.' He said: 'A sign between you and him is that when you see him, you will feel a shiver.'"

"So I went out with my sword, until I reached him at a place he frequented during the time of Asr prayer. When I saw him, I indeed felt the shiver described to me by the Prophet. I approached him, fearing that engaging with him may distract me from the prayer. I prayed while walking towards him. He nodded at me, and when I reached him, he asked: 'Who is the man?' I replied: 'A man from the Arabs who heard about you and your assembly regarding this man, and so he came for that purpose.' He said: 'Yes, we are in that situation.' Then I walked with him for a while, and when an opportunity arose, I attacked him with my sword and killed him."

"Afterward, I returned to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'I have succeeded, O Messenger of Allah, I have killed him.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then the Messenger of Allah took me to his house, gave me a stick, and said: 'Keep this with you, O Abdullah ibn Unays!' I went out with it among the people, and they asked: 'Why do you have this stick with you?' I said: 'The Messenger of Allah gave it to me and commanded me to keep it with me.' They said: 'Why don't you go back to him and ask about this?' So I returned to him and asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you give me this stick?' He explained it to me."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نَصْرِ بْنُ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْحَافِظُ.قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْعَبْدِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا النُّفَيْلِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أُنَيْسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أُنَيْسٍ، قَالَ:دَعَانِي رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ ابْنَ نُبَيْحٍ الْهُذَلِيَّ يَجْمَعُ النَّاسَ لِيَغْزُوَنِي، وَهُوَ بنخله [ (٨) ] ، أو بعرنة فأتيه فَاقْتُلْهُ.قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. انْعَتْهُ لِي، حَتَّى أَعْرِفَهُ. قَالَ: آيَةُ مَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ.أَنَّكَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَهُ، وَجَدْتَ لَهُ قُشَعْرِيرَةً [ (٩) ] . قَالَ فَخَرَجْتُ مُتَوَشِّحًا بِسَيْفِي، حَتَّى دَفَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ فِي ظُعُنٍ يَرْتَادُ بِهِنَّ مَنْزِلًا، حِينَ كَانَ وَقْتُ الْعَصْرِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُ وَجَدْتُ لَهُ مَا وَصَفَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عليه وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْقُشَعْرِيرَةِ، فَأَقْبَلْتُ نَحْوَهُ، وَخَشِيتُ أَنْ تَكُونَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ مُحَاوَلَةٌ تَشْغَلُنِي عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ، فَصَلَّيْتُ وَأَنَا أَمْشِي نَحْوَهُ، أُومِئُ بِرَأْسِي إِيمَاءً، فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ، قَالَ: مَنِ الرَّجُلُ؟ قُلْتُ: رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ، سَمِعَ بِكَ وَبِجَمْعِكَ لِهَذَا الرَّجُلِ، فَجَاءَ لِذَلِكَ، قَالَ: أَجَلْ، نَحْنُ فِي ذَلِكَ، قَالَ:فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ شَيْئًا، حَتَّى إِذَا أَمْكَنَنِي، حَمَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ بِالسَّيْفِ فَقَتَلْتُهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ وَتَرَكْتُ ظَعَائِنَهُ مُكِبَّاتٍ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ الله صلى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: أَفْلَحَ الْوَجْهُ، قُلْتُ: قَدْ قَتَلْتُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: صَدَقْتَ. ثُمَّ قَامَ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عليه وَسَلَّمَ فَدَخَلَ بِي بَيْتَهُ، فَأَعْطَانِي عَصًا، فَقَالَ: أَمْسِكْ هَذِهِ عِنْدَكَ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُنَيْسٍ! فَخَرَجْتُ بِهَا عَلَى النَّاسِ، فَقَالُوا: مَا هَذِهِ الْعَصَا مَعَكَ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُنَيْسٍ؟قُلْتُ: أَعْطَانِيهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أُمْسِكَهَا عِنْدِي. قَالُوا: أَفَلَا تَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِ فَتَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ. قَالَ: فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لِمَ أَعْطَيْتَنِي هذه[ (٨) ] (نخلة) : «اسم مكان» .[ (٩) ] (القشعريرة) انقباض الجلد واجتماعه.

The Story of Abdullah ibn Rawahah's Staff

Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: "This staff? It is a sign between you and me on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, the smallest of people are those who lean on staves on that day."

He continued: "Abdullah used to carry it with his sword until he died. When he passed away, he instructed for it to be placed in his shroud, and we all buried him with it."

This narration was reported by Abdullah ibn Warith from Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar. Khalid ibn Sufyan al-Hudhali explained 'al-mutakhashiroon' as those who lean on staves, with the singular form being 'mukhasirah.'

This story was documented in Imam Ahmad's Musnad (3:496) and narrated by Abu Dawood from Abu Ma'mar, from Abdullah ibn Warith, from Ibn Ishaq. For further details, refer to Ibn Hisham's biography (4:228).

Arabic:

الْعَصَا؟ قَالَ: آيَةٌ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ. إِنَّ أَقَلَّ النَّاسِ الْمُتَخَصِّرُونَ [ (١٠) ] يَوْمَئِذٍ.قَالَ: فَقَرَنَهَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بِسَيْفِهِ فَلَمْ تَزَلْ مَعَهُ، حَتَّى إِذَا مَاتَ أَمَرَ بِهَا فَضُمَّتْ مَعَهُ فِي كَفَنِهِ، فَدُفِنَا جَمِيعًا [ (١١) ] .رَوَاهُ عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، وَقَالَ: إِلَى خَالِدِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ الْهُذَلِيِّ [ (١٢) ][ (١٠) ] (المتخصرون) المتكئون على المخاصر وهي العصي، واحدتها: مخصرة.[ (١١) ] أخرجه الإمام أحمد في «مسنده» (٣: ٤٩٦) .[ (١٢) ] رواه أَبُو دَاوُدَ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ، عن ابن إسحاق.. وانظر في سيرة ابن هشام (٤: ٢٢٨) .
