Chapter on the Conversion of Khalid ibn al-Walid (May Allah be pleased with him)

Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, saying: Abu Abdullah al-Asbahani informed us, saying: Hasan ibn al-Jahm narrated to us, saying: Husayn ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, saying: Al-Waqidi said: Yahya ibn al-Mughira ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham reported to me, saying: I heard my father narrating about Khalid ibn al-Walid, he said, "When Allah, the Exalted, intended the good He intended for me, He cast Islam into my heart and guided me to righteousness. I said, 'I have witnessed all these places for the sake of Muhammad, peace be upon him. There is no place that I bear witness to, except I depart from it, feeling that I am not destined for anything. Indeed, Muhammad will appear.' When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, left for Hudaybiyyah, I set out with the polytheists' horses and met the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, among his companions by Asfan. I removed his covering, offered him protection, and gathered to change our minds, but it did not resolve for us. We were in doubt, so I checked our anxieties. He prayed Dhuhr prayer in congregation in front of us. We intended to change against him, but it did not firm up, and there was an option in it. He read what was in our hearts of worries, so he prayed the Asr prayer, the fear prayer, with his companions, which affected us deeply. I said, 'This man is protected.' So we parted ways and abandoned the ways of our horses, and I took an oath. When he reconciled with Quraysh in Hudaybiyyah, and Quraysh rejected him, I said to myself, 'What else is left?'

Letter to the King of Abyssinia

O Negus, indeed, Muhammad has followed and his companions are with you in safety. Therefore, I take refuge with Heraclius and seek asylum from my religion whether Christianity or Judaism. I shall live among non-Arabs, living in disgrace, or remain in my homeland with those who remain. When the Messenger of Allah entered upon performing Umrah, I refrained and did not witness his entry. My brother, Al-Walid ibn Al-Walid, had entered with the Prophet during Umrah. He sought me but did not find me and wrote me a letter, in which he wrote:

Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem - After this! I have not seen anything more astonishing than your turning away from Islam while your intellect, and anyone else's, remains ignorant of Islam. The Messenger of Allah asked about you and said: "Where is Khalid?" I replied: "Allah will bring him." He said: "His like, Islam does not know, and if he had turned his support and might to the Muslims against the polytheists, it would have been better for him. And we have preferred him over others. So be steadfast, my brother, and do not miss this opportunity."

When his letter reached me, I was eager to leave and it increased my desire for Islam. In my dream, I saw myself in a desolate land, and then I went out to a lush and vast land. I said: "This must be a good sign." Upon reaching Madinah, I said, "I will mention it to Abu Bakr." He said, "This is your way out that Allah has guided you to Islam from the narrowness of polytheism."

When I decided to go out to meet the Messenger of Allah, I asked who would accompany me to Muhammad. I met Safwan ibn Umayyah and said to him, "Do you not see our state? Muhammad has emerged among the Arabs and non-Arabs. If we go to Muhammad and follow him, his honor will be our honor." He rejected and said, "Had there been no one else but me, I would never follow him." So we parted ways. Then, I met Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl and said to him the same as I said to Safwan. He responded as Safwan did. I thought to myself, "This is a man whose father and brother were killed in Badr." So I kept quiet.

When I mentioned to him what I had said to him, he said: "I will not mention it." So I went back to my house and commanded my she-camel to come out until I met Uthman ibn Talha. I said: "This is my friend, and if I had mentioned to him what I hope for, then I mentioned those who were killed from his ancestors. I disliked to mention it, so I said: 'I have nothing to do while I am on my way.' I mentioned to him what had transpired, saying: "We are like a fox in a hole if you pour sins into it, it will leave it." I said to him something similar to what I had said to my companion. He quickly responded and said: "I set out today wanting to go, and this is my she-camel for reconciliation." I said: "We agreed that if he preceded me, I would stop, and if I preceded him, I would stop for him." He said: "We traveled until we reached a settlement, and we found Amr ibn al-'As there. He said: "Welcome to the people." We said: "And to you." He asked: "Where are you headed?" We said: "What brought you out?" He said: "Entering Islam and following Muhammad." He said: "That is what I had intended." He said: "So we all went together until we entered the city, and we stopped at the edge of Hurrat Al-Medinah, our mounts were made available, and the Messenger of Allah was informed about us, so he was happy with us. I put on my best clothes, then I leaned towards the Messenger of Allah and my brother met me and said: "Hurry up, for the Messenger of Allah has been informed about you. So hasten your footsteps, as he awaits you." So we hastened our pace until I saw him and he kept smiling at me until I stood in front of him and greeted him with the greetings of Prophethood. He returned the greeting with a smiling face. I said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah said: "Praise be to Allah who has guided you. I saw in you intelligence, and I hoped that none would guide you except to goodness." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! You have seen what I witnessed from those positions where you were being stubborn regarding the truth. Pray to Allah to forgive me for it." The Messenger of Allah said: "Islam erases what comes before it." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, upon that." He said: "O Allah, forgive Khalid ibn Al-Walid for all the obstacles he placed in the way of Your path."
