الخَبَرُ: The Story of the Jewish Man from the Bani 'Abd al-Ashhal*

Introduction:

Reported to us by Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi said: Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub told us, who said: Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Jabbar told us, who said: Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated to us from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Salih ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf informed me, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Salamah ibn Salamah ibn Waqsh, who said:

The Story:

There was a Jewish man among our tribe who went out to address his people, the Bani 'Abd al-Ashhal, one morning. He spoke to them about the resurrection, the Day of Judgment, Paradise, Hellfire, accountability, and the scales of justice. The people, who were polytheists, did not believe in a resurrection after death, and this happened just before the sending of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They exclaimed: "O Fulan! — or in another narration, "Woe to you, O Fulan! This will happen? Are people resurrected after death and rewarded with Paradise and Hellfire based on their deeds?" He replied: "Yes, by the One I swear by, I wish that my portion of that Fire would be kindled into the greatest furnace in your homes, you would kindle it, then you would throw me into it, and yet I would be saved from the Fire tomorrow." They asked: "O Fulan, what would be the sign of that?" He said: "A Prophet will be sent from the direction of this land." — and he gestured with his hand towards Mecca and Yemen. They asked: "When will you see him?" So he pointed to the edge of his garment, and they saw me while I was lying in the courtyard of my family's house, conversing with the people, and he said: "If this boy lives to reach the end of his lifespan, he will witness him."

The Arrival of the Messenger of Allah

So the night and day passed until Allah sent His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. He was indeed living among them, and we believed in him and affirmed him, while others rejected him out of transgression and envy.

We said to him: “O So-and-so, are you not the one who said what you said and informed us?” He replied: “It is not true.”

The narration can be found in Ibn Hisham's biography (1:231), reported by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (3:468), narrated by Al-Salhi in Al-Sirah al-Shamiyyah (1:135). He said: “It was narrated by Ibn Ishaq, and Al-Bukhari in Al-Tarikh verified it, as well as Al-Hakim in Al-Ikhtifā' (1:233) and Al-Wafa' (1:47).
