I was with a younger companion and we had with us some camels for milking and a few sheep that were being looked after. I was lying down, either asleep or half asleep, when I heard a caller with a loud, hoarse voice shouting: ‘O people of Quraysh, verily this Prophet has been sent!'”

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Key points:

  • Emphasis on the importance of a certain man with specific characteristics.
  • Instructions related to rituals and practices at a sacred site.
  • A description of a vision the speaker experienced.
  • A mention of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

Translation:

Among you is a tall man, with a white complexion and broad shoulders, boasting a hidden pride and following a revered tradition. Let him and his offspring act sincerely, and let men from various tribes follow him. Let them drink from the water, touch perfumes, hold onto the corner, circumambulate the House seven times, then let them seek out Abu Qubays and seek rain. The man with them possesses purity and goodness in his nature. Otherwise, your actions and lives would be futile.

She said, "I woke up - by the knowledge of God - confused, having seen a bewildering sight that left my skin crawling and my mind disturbed. I related my dream, slept in the valleys of Mecca, and every Bedouin who saw me said, 'This is the gray-haired woman of praise.' And among them was Quraysh. They approached every wise man from every tribe to come and shower blessings and perform the rituals. Then they sought out Abu Qubays. People gathered around him, circling him until their efforts led to a halt, and they rested their sides while offering supplications. Among them was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a young boy most capable and admirable. Abd al-Muttalib stood and prayed, 'O God, the one who removes loneliness and sorrow, You are the Knower without being taught, and the One asked without being implored. Here are Your servants seeking pardon, complaining about the difficulties they face.'

Translation

To you is their behavior that has darkened the joints and feet. So listen, O Allah, and shower us with heavy, abundant rain. They did not aim for the house until the sky burst open with its water and the valley filled with its flood. I heard two elderly men from Quraysh saying to ‘Abd al-Muttalib: "Congratulations, Aba al-Bat'hāa, congratulations. By your presence, the people of al-Bat'hāa live." The people of Ruqayyah said: “By the grayness of al-Hamd, may Allah water our town. We have lost our livestock and the rain has gone, filled with water for us. It lived, so the cities and the trees lived, streams from Allah with blessed abundance. The best news one could have received is that the matter is blessed, through which clouds are sought after... There is no fairness or danger in people." Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran informed us, saying: Husayn ibn Safwan told us, saying: ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abu al-Dunyā informed us, saying: Zakariyya ibn Yahya ibn 'Umar al-Bakkā'ī said: Zahr ibn Hisn narrated to me, from his grandfather Humayd ibn Munhib, who said: My uncle 'Urwah ibn Mudarras ibn Aws ibn Hārithah ibn La'm mentioned to me what Mukhramah ibn Nawfal narrated, from his mother Ruqayyah bint Abi Sayfiyy ibn Hashim, who was a wet nurse of ‘Abd al-Muttalib. She said: Years of drought afflicted Quraysh, darkening their skin and exhausting their bones. While I stood, whether praying or lost in thought, I heard a caller shouting loudly, saying: "O people of Quraysh, these are the cattle."

The Descent of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Rain Prayer

Days of Shade
The Prophet descended among you, and his time has shaded you. Behold the signs of his arrival; welcome to a life of abundance. Look for a man among you, broad-shouldered, fair-skinned, with soft locks, smooth cheeks, captivating eyes. He carries a dignity that silences criticism and a guidance leads to him. Let him and his son be sincere, let them descend from every valley a man, let them draw water, touch fragrance, then perform the ritual, and ascend Abu Qubays. Let a man pray for rain, and assure the people, and the rain will come, all that you desire.

A Vision Fulfilled
I woke up - Allah knows best - alarmed, my skin tingled, my mind wandered. My dreams shrank. By the sacred precinct, there remained nothing but "Praise be." Men of Quraysh completed the journey, men descended from every valley, they offered, touched, and received. Then they ascended Abu Qubays, running before the end of their journey, until they reached the mountaintop. At the summit stood Abd al-Muttalib and with him the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a boy in his prime or close to hardship, praying: "Oh Allah, remover of grief, teacher of the untaught, they plead to You, complaints from Your sacred people. Remove the hardship and drought, shower us with abundant rain. By the Kaaba, they did not aim until the sky burst open, the valley swelled with water, and two elderly men from Quraysh heard saying: 'Abdullah ibn Jud'an, Harb ibn Umayyah, Hisham ibn al-Mughirah.' They said to Abd al-Muttalib: 'Congratulations, Abu al-Bat'hah. The people of al-Bat'hah have truly lived with you.

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

بِشَيْبَةِ الْحَمْدِ (31)

God blessed our town with the gray-haired Abd al-Muttalib,

When we were in need and the fertile valley dried up, rain came,

And with the water came a flowing stream,

Which brought life to animals and vegetation,

As a gift from God, His bird appeared,

And the best of tidings was brought by it, let it be known,

Blessed be the matter, the clouds were sought through it,

Among creatures there is none like it, neither fair nor dangerous.

Explanation:

"Shaybat al-Hamd" is the title of Abd al-Muttalib.

This information is found in "Tabaqat Ibn Saad" (1:90).
