The Story of Juhayna: A Lesson in Gratitude and Faith

It was narrated that Juhani fell unconscious and was declared dead. When he regained consciousness and was asked to thank his Lord, believe in the Prophet, and reject idolatry, he complied. Abu Al-Husayn ibn Bishran Al-‘Adl from Baghdad narrated that it was Abu ‘Ali Al-Husayn ibn Safwan who informed him. He was told by ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Dunya who was informed by Ibrahim ibn ‘Abdullah Al-Harawi, from Yahya ibn Zakariyya ibn Abi Zaidah, from Mujalid, from ‘Amir who recounted:
We reached some lands belonging to Juhayna and found an elderly man seated in one of their places. I approached him and he shared the following: A man from our people in the days of ignorance fell ill and went into a coma. We shrouded him, thinking he had died, and began digging his grave when he suddenly sat up and said, "I went where you saw me, I was unconscious. They told me, 'Your mother, Habl, is in a difficult position. Don't you see your grave being dug while your mother is in pain that might be fatal? What if we divert her pain away from you, and instead throw into it the tough grass that has just been cut and is full of moisture? Will you thank your Lord, pray, and distance yourself from the path of idolatry that leads astray?' I replied, 'Yes,' and I was set free. Look at what the grass has done."
