Babīu ʼiʻlāmi l-jinniyyi ṣāḥibahū bi-khurūji n-nabiyyi ṣallā llāhu ʻalayhi wa ālihī wa-sallam wa mā sumiʻa mina l-aṣwāti bi-khurūjihī dūna ruʼyat qaʼilihā

Abū ʻAbd Allāhi l-Ḥāfiẓu fī "Al-Mustadrak," informed us saying: Abū al-ʻAbbāsi Muḥammadu ibnu Yaʻqūba informed us, saying: Ar-Rabīʻu ibnu Sulaymāna informed us, saying: ʻAbdu llāhi ibnu Wahbin informed us, saying: ʻUmaru ibnu Muḥammadin that Sālima ibnu ʻAbdillāhi informed him from ʻAbdullāhi ibni ʻUmarī, said: "I never heard ʻUmar ibnu l-Khaṭṭābi (may Allah be pleased with him) say about anything, 'I believe such and such.'"

Abū ʻAmru Muḥammadu ibnu ʻAbdillāhi l-Bisṭāmīyu informed us, saying: Abū Bakrin Aḥmadu ibnu Ibrāhīm al-Ismaʻīlīyu informed us, saying: Ibrāhīmu ibnu Hāniʼin informed us, saying: Ar-Ramadīyu informed us, saying: Yaḥyā ibnu Bukayrin informed us, saying: ʻAbdu llāhi ibnu Wahbin informed me from ʻUmar ibni Muḥammadin that Sālim narrated from ʻAbdullāhi ibni ʻUmarī, saying: "I heard ʻUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) never say about anything, 'I believe it's like this,' except it was as he believed. Once, ʻUmar was sitting down and a handsome man passed by. He said, 'I have made a mistake in my thinking. Either this man was following his religion in pre-Islamic times, or he used to be their soothsayer, and they invited him.' So ʻUmar said to him: 'I have made a mistake in my thinking, or you were following your religion in pre-Islamic times, or you used to be their soothsayer.' He replied: ‘There is no extra from (ḥ).’ Thus it is in (ḥ), and it matches what's in Sahih al-Bukhari, and in (m) and (h): ‘I believe such and such unless it was actually so,’ and the Hadith was also narrated by al-Bukhari in Sahih Bukhari. Fathu l-Bārī (7:177) And its meaning is that ʻUmar ibnu l-Khaṭṭābi was one of the inspired narrators, and the inspired one is the one who receives something internally and conveys it with insight and perception.

The Conversion of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab

In a narration found in Sahih al-Bukhari, it is reported that a Muslim man once declared to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab his unwavering faith upon hearing a revelation from the world of spirits. This man, previously a soothsayer in the days of ignorance (pre-Islamic times), described a peculiar incident in the marketplace where he encountered a terrifying apparition that led him to Islam.

As 'Umar listened to the man's account, he too recalled a moment when he witnessed a similar event, involving a man sacrificing a calf with a loud cry, proclaiming the Oneness of God amidst a shocked crowd. 'Umar was intrigued, and resolved to investigate further.

Both incidents culminated in powerful declarations of faith, echoing the man in the marketplace, insisting on the belief in the One God. 'Umar's curiosity was piqued, and he committed to exploring the truth behind these remarkable occurrences. He was later informed by revelation that the man who made this declaration was indeed a Prophet.

Story of Omar ibn al-Khattab and the Soothsayer

First Narration:

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us saying: Ahmed ibn Muhammad told me that Hammad ibn Shakir narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Isma'il, meaning Al-Bukhari, narrated to us that Yahya ibn Suleiman mentioned to him, and the apparent meaning of this narration implies that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself heard the loud screams of the sacrificed calf. This is also clear in a weak narration about Umar's conversion to Islam, and all narrations indicate that this soothsayer spoke of it based on what he saw and heard. And Allah knows best.

Second Narration:

Abu Al-Husayn ibn Bishran Al-Adl from Baghdad dictated to us, saying: Abu Amro Uthman ibn Ahmad ibn Abdullah, known as Ibn As-Sammak, informed us that Abu Al-Ahwas Muhammad ibn Al-Haytham Al-Qadi narrated to us that Sa'id ibn Kathir ibn 'Ufair said that Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated from Ibn Al-Had from 'Abdullah ibn Sulaym, from Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, who said: "While Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting, he saw a man and asked him about his origin. The man replied that he came from Sham. Umar then asked him where he intended to go. The man mentioned a house and added that he hadn't left until he reached Umar. Umar inquired if the man had any information he wanted to share. The man answered in the affirmative. Umar asked if he had ever witnessed anything related to fortune-telling, to which the man replied positively. Umar then asked him to share something he had seen. The man recounted a night in a valley where he heard a caller shouting: 'O beautiful! A crucial piece of information, a man is shouting, proclaiming: There is no god but Allah for the jinn and their offspring, for humans and their cattle, and for horses and their dwellings.' I said, 'Who is this?' Indeed, this was a message that terrified the jinn and frustrated humans."

The man asked him, 'I adjure you by Allah, were you a soothsayer in the days of ignorance?' He replied, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, there is no need to mention the days of ignorance, for Allah, the Most High, has brought Islam. He said, 'I adjure you by Allah, were you a soothsayer?' He said, 'O Allah, yes.' He said, 'How amazing that your jinn brought you such things.' He said, 'O Allah, yes, one day while I was sitting, she said to me, "Have you not seen the demons and their cattle, their idle chatter, and their impudence?" Umar said, 'Allah is the Greatest.' He said, 'I went to Mecca, and there was a man with some of those people slaughtering a calf. I stood there hoping to get some meat. When he slaughtered it, something cried out from its stomach. Clear and Accurate English Translation:

In clear Arabic language, he called out in Mecca that there is no deity but Allah. They stopped him and went to look, and they found the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had been sent. Al-Mu'tamir said: "I asked Al-Hajjaj ibn Artat from whom he had heard this, and he said he heard it from Mujahid. Al-Hajjaj informed me partly, which was narrated by Ahmad ibn Hanbal. He said: Muhammad ibn Bakr Al-Bursani informed us, saying that Ubaydullah ibn Abi Ziyad said that Abdullah ibn Kathir Ad-Dari narrated from Mujahid: 'An elder who lived in the pre-Islamic era told us when we were in the expedition of Roudis, also known as Ibn 'Isa: "I used to shepherd a cow for our family. I heard from within it a voice saying, 'O family of Darih, a clear statement, a man calls out: There is no deity but Allah.' We then arrived at Mecca and found the Prophet had come out in Mecca." This is what Imam Abu Uthman informed us about. He said that Abu Muhammad Al-Azdi told us, who was informed by Abu Bakr Al-Hafid, who narrated from Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, who told me about my father, and he mentioned it.
