Excerpt from Classical Arabic Text

Key Points:

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to the location.
  • Abdul Muttalib expressed deep concern for someone.
  • The narration continues with a story from the time of ignorance.

Translation:

Abdul Muttalib awaited until the Prophet, peace be upon him and his family, arrived. At that moment, the camels embraced him. Abdul Muttalib said, "My son, I have feared for you in a way that I have never feared for anything else. By Allah, I will never send you on any need again, nor will I ever let you be separated from me thereafter. Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz reported to us, saying, Abu Salih reported to us that Khalaf ibn Muhammad al-Karabisyi narrated to us in Bukhara: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, the interpreter, informed us, Ahmad ibn al-Fadl told us that Isa al-Finjar said, who narrated from Kharijah, from Bahz ibn Hakim, from his father, from Muawiyah ibn Haydah, said: Haydah ibn Muawiyah went for Umrah in the time of Jahiliyyah. While performing Tawaf around the Kabah, he saw an elderly man with two streaks of white hair on his head. He was saying, 'My Lord, return to me my rider Muhammad...' Is the rider of this man Muhammad?' They replied, 'Yes, he is the master of Quraysh and the son of its master. This is Abdul Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf.' I asked, 'Is this Muhammad his son?' They said, 'He is his grandson and the most beloved person to him. He has many camels. If any of them goes astray, he sends his sons to search for it. If his sons get tired, he would send his grandsons. He has now sent him in pursuit of a stray camel, and his grandsons have since lost sight of him.

By Allah, I did not leave this land until Muhammad arrived, along with the camels."

Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasār said:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, was with his grandfather Abdul Muttalib. Al-‘Abbās ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn Ma‘bad informed me, on the authority of some of his family, saying: It was the practice to set up a bedding for Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of the Messenger of Allah in the shade of the Ka'bah. None of his sons would sit on it out of reverence for him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, would come until he sat on it. His uncles would then rush to delay him, but his grandfather would say: "Let my son sit." He would then wipe his back and say: "This child of mine has a special status." Abdul Muttalib passed away and the Messenger of Allah [6] was eight years old, eight years after the Year of the Elephant.

Ibn Ishaq added: Abdul Muttalib, as they claim, used to leave instructions for Abu Talib regarding the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, as ‘Abdullāh (the father of the Prophet) and Abu Talib shared the same mother. Abdul Muttalib would say in his alleged instructions to him: "I entrust you, O son of Manaf, with my legacy after me, to care for The Orphan who is more precious than one's own child..." and he mentioned other verses, saying: "Indeed, Ahmad is the one I have hoped for guidance. The learned know of the Covenant that The youth is The Master of the people of Najd, transcending all others in strength of body." He also said: "I have entrusted the one I called 'Talib,' 'Abd Manaf, who has experience, with the son of the one who has departed, without fault." [6] In some copies: "the Prophet." [7] In some copies: "I have found him."

Poetic Verses

Abu Nuwas mentioned another set of verses, saying:

"I am not one who despairs, I am only the hopeful one, That God may make true the words of the monk. And that the family of Ghālib may prevail, I have heard of the most wondrous things: From every knowledgeable scribe, This is the one who is followed like stray camels. Whoever dwells in the plains or the mountains, Also, whoever repents to the One who forgives."
