First Sermon of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina

Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman reported: "The first sermon delivered by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in Medina was when he stood among the people and praised Allah and glorified Him with what is due to Him. Then he said: 'O people, prepare for yourselves, for by Allah, one of you will be struck unconscious, leaving his sheep without a shepherd. And his Lord will say: 'He has no spokesman or protector other than Me. Did not My messenger come to you and deliver the message? I provided you with wealth and favored you. Whatever you did for yourself will now be seen right and left, but you will see nothing. Then look ahead, and all you will see is the Hellfire. Whoever can protect his face from the fire, even with half a date, should do so. And whoever cannot find that, then with a kind word, for by it a good deed is rewarded tenfold up to seven hundred times over. May peace be upon you and the Messenger of Allah, and may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.'

Second Sermon in Medina

The Prophet repeated the sermon again and said: 'All praise is due to Allah. I praise Him and seek His help. [In some narrations, it is mentioned as 'with a part of a date'].

Seeking Refuge and Bearing Witness

We seek refuge in Allah from the evils within ourselves and the wickedness of our deeds. Whoever is guided by Allah, none can lead astray, and whoever is led astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partners.

The Best Discourse

The best discourse is the Book of Allah. Blessed is the one whom Allah adorns with faith in their heart, entering them into Islam after disbelief, and choosing them over others in speech. Love those whom Allah loves, love Allah with all your hearts, and never tire of the words and remembrance of Allah. For Allah selects and honours whom He wills. He distinguishes His elite from the rest of His servants with the best of speech, actions, and all that is lawful and prohibited among people.

Worship and Unity

Serve Allah and associate nothing with Him. Fear Him as He deserves to be feared. Speak the truth with sincerity, and cultivate love and harmony among yourselves through the spirit of Allah. Allah is displeased when His covenant is broken.

Peace be upon you, and may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.
