Chapter on the Construction of the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah in Al-Madinah

It has been narrated that Talhah ibn Ali al-Yamaami reported about the construction of the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Al-Madinah, and what transpired upon his return with his people near the water of Ma'dmadah. Abu Al-Husayn ibn Al-Fadl Al-Qattan reported to us in Baghdad, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Attab informed us, saying: Al-Qasim ibn Abdullah ibn Al-Mughirah narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi Uwais informed us, saying: Ismail ibn Ibrahim ibn Uqba reported from his uncle Musa ibn Uqba. Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz reported to us, saying: Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn Al-Fadl ibn Muhammad Al-Sha'rani reported from his grandfather, who reported from Ibrahim ibn Al-Mundhir, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Fulayh, from Musa ibn Uqba, from Ibn Shihab, saying: "The mosque was used as a storage place for dates for two orphan boys from the tribe of Al-Najjar, in the chamber of As'ad ibn Zurarah, for Sahl and Suhayl, the sons of Amr. It is claimed that there were men from the Muslims who used to pray in this storage place before the arrival of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Al-Madinah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave it to them, and it is said that As'ad ibn Zurarah offered them a date-palm tree in Banu Bayadah as a reward for their storage place, but they said: No, we will give it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). It is also said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) bought it from them and built a mosque there. He and his companions would carry the plaster, and he would say while carrying the plaster: 'This is the carrier, there is no carrier like the carrier of Khaybar. This is the most noble of our Lord and the most pure.'

Invocation and the Migration Story

He says, "O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter... so have mercy on the Ansar and the Muhajirun." Ibn Shihab said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had taken the appearance of a man from the Muslims who was not mentioned in the Hadith, and I have not received in the Hadith that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took the appearance of a poem verse other than these verses." This was narrated by Al-Bukhari in Sahih from the Hadith of Uqail from Az-Zuhri, from Urwah in the story of the migration.

Account of the Prophetic Migration

Anas ibn Malik narrated, "When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived in Al-Madinah, he stayed in an elevated area in a neighborhood known as Bani Amr ibn Awf. He resided there for fourteen nights. Then, he sent for the leaders of Bani Najjar and they came carrying their swords. Anas said, 'It is as if I am seeing the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on his riding beast with Abu Bakr behind him, surrounded by the men of Bani Najjar until he reached the courtyard of Abu Ayyub. The Messenger of Allah prayed wherever the prayer overtook him, even in the sheepfolds. Then he ordered the construction of a mosque and sent for the leaders of Bani Najjar. When they arrived, he said, 'O Bani Najjar, help me in building a wall here.' They replied, 'No, by Allah! We will not ask for its price except from Allah.' Anas said, 'It contained the graves of the pagans, it was in ruins, and there were date palms there.'"

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

In this Hadith, it is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) entered the graves of the polytheists at Al-Madinah, which were then dug up, leveled, and the palm trees cut down. The palm trees were lined up as Qiblah (direction of prayer) for him, and the idols were turned into stones. The Prophet was with them while they were moving rocks, and they would say, "O Allah, there is no good but the good of the Hereafter. Grant victory to the Ansar and the Muhajirun." This Hadith is reported by Imam Al-Bukhari in Sahih and narrated by Musaddad. Muslim also reported it from Yahya ibn Yahya.

According to another narration mentioned by Anas ibn Malik, there were burial places of the polytheists, palm trees, and fields belonging to the tribe of Najjar around the mosque. The Prophet asked the Companions to build the mosque on that ground. When they expressed hesitation, he ordered the cutting down of the palm trees, leveling of the fields, and destruction of the burial places of the polytheists. And he said, "Forgive and support us." Musa further narrated a similar account from Abdul Warith, who insisted that destruction took place as the Prophet commanded.

This Hadith is included in the Book of Virtues of the Ansar (Heroes) in Sahih Al-Bukhari. It is also found in the Book of Prayer, Chapter: Can the graves of the pre-Islamic polytheists be dug up, and mosques be built in their place? It is mentioned in two sections of the Book of Endowments under the topics: Establishing a mosque on communal land is valid and If the founder says that he does not seek its reward except from Allah, it is valid.

Additionally, Imam Muslim included this Hadith in the Book of Mosques in a chapter concerning building the Mosque of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Abu Dawood also reported it under the section of Prayer from Musaddad, while Ibn Majah included it in the chapter on Prayer. The additional details in brackets are to indicate certain variations in narration.

Building and Renovation of the Prophet's Mosque

In a narration by Ibn Dasa, he said: Abu Dawood informed us, who said: Mujahid ibn Musa narrated to us, who said: Yahya ibn Ibrahim informed us, who said: My father narrated to us, from Salih, who said: Nafi' informed us that Abdullah ibn Umar told him, "The mosque during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was built with mud bricks, its roof was made of palm branches, and its columns were made of palm wood. Abu Bakr did not make any changes to it, but Umar made additions to it. He reconstructed it following its original structure during the time of the Prophet, using mud bricks and palm branches. He replaced the palm columns with wood, and Uthman further expanded it extensively. He built its walls with ornamented stones and silver, changed the columns to carved stones, and roofed it with shafts of palm trees." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari in Al-Sahih)

Renovation of the Prophet's Mosque

In another narration, it is mentioned that during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, the walls of the Prophet's Mosque were rebuilt using palm tree trunks and palm branches for roofing. When the mosque deteriorated during the time of Uthman, he rebuilt it using baked bricks, and since then it has remained standing. According to another narration, it will remain so until the Day of Judgment." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari in Al-Sahih)

Building Mosques and Acts of Benevolence

Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Dunya informed us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Hammad al-Dabbiyy informed us, saying: 'Abd al-Rahim ibn Sulayman narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Muslim, from al-Hasan, who said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) built the mosque, his companions helped him while he was with them. They mixed mortar until his chest was covered. He then said: 'Build it like the building of Moses' tent.' I asked al-Hasan, 'What is "Moses' tent"?' He replied: 'When he raised his hand, the tent reached to the top, meaning the ceiling.'"

Support of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran reported to us, saying: Abu al-Hasan al-Basri told us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Hammad narrated to us; Abu Salama al-Minqari informed us that Hammad ibn Salama narrated to them from Abu Sinan, from Ya'la ibn Shaddad ibn Aws, from 'Ubadah that: "The Ansar gathered wealth and brought it to the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, build us a mosque and beautify it. How long will we pray under this reed mat?' He replied: 'I am not averse to building the likes of the tent of Moses for my brother Moses."

Constructing the Mosque in Madinah

Abu al-Hasan al-Muqri' reported to us, saying: 'Is-haq ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us; Yusuf ibn Ya'qub informed us that Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr narrated to them that Mulaazim ibn 'Amr reported from 'Abdullah ibn Badr, from Qais ibn Talq, from his father Talq ibn 'Ali, saying: "I helped the Prophet (peace be upon him) in building the mosque in Madinah. He used to say: 'Bring mud closer to the clay, for it is the best for its construction.' His sons reported to me later that he said: 'Among you, the most helpful is Sa'id.'" With this chain of narration, Talq ibn 'Ali said: 'We went as a delegation to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him that we had a pact in our land. We sought his blessings, and he performed [the ritual of] mouth-rinsing, then poured the water for us in a container saying: 'Go."

Translation from Classical Arabic to English

By this water, once you reach your land, break your covenant, wash the place of the covenant with this water, and make a mosque in its place. We said, "O Prophet of Allah! The town is far away and the water is insufficient." He replied, "Extend it with water, for it will not be increased except in goodness." So we carried the load of the water container and asked who will carry it. We took turns carrying it, each man a day and a night. When we reached our land, we did as commanded. Our guide that day was a man from Tay, and when we called for prayer, he said, "The call to truth," then fled and was never seen again.
