The Reason for the Conversion to Islam of the Sons of S'ayyah

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, saying: Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub reported to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd Al-Jabbar told us, saying: Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated to us from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Asim ibn Umar [ibn Qatadah] reported to me from a sheikh of Bani Qurayzah, saying: "Do you know about the Islam of Usayd, Tha'labah, the sons of S'ayyah, and Asad ibn Ubayd, individuals from the group of Hadhl? They were neither from Bani Qurayzah nor from Nadir - were they superior to them?" I said: "No." He said: "A man from Sham, a Jew known as Ibn Al-Hayyaban, came to us and stayed with us. By God, we never saw a man better in performing the five daily prayers than him. He came to us two years before the sending of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. Whenever we faced drought and prayed for rain, we would say: 'O son of Al-Hayyaban, go out and pray for rain for us.' He would respond: 'No, by Allah, until you give charity in front of your exit.' We would ask: 'How much?' He would reply: 'A sa' of dates or two sa' of [extra] provisions.'"

ذِكْرُ سَبَبِ إِسْلَامِ ابْنَيْ سَعْيَةَ* أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ: مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَاصِمُ بْنُ عُمَرَ [بْنِ قَتَادَةَ] [ (١) ] ، عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ، قَالَ:هَلْ تَدْرِي عَمَّا كَانَ إِسْلَامِ أُسَيْدٍ، وَثَعْلَبَةَ، ابْنَيْ سَعْيَةَ، وَأَسَدِ [ (٢) ] بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، نَفَرٌ مِنْ هَذْلٍ، لَمْ يَكُونُوا مِنْ بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ وَلَا النَّضِيرِ، كَانُوا فَوْقَ ذَاكَ؟فَقُلْتُ: لَا، قَالَ: فَإِنَّهُ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ الشَّامِ مِنْ يَهُودَ، يُقَالُ لَهُ: ابْنُ الْهَيَّبَانِ [ (٣) ] ، فَأَقَامَ عِنْدَنَا، وَاللهِ مَا رَأَيْنَا رَجُلًا قَطُّ لَا يُصَلِّي الْخَمْسَ خَيْرًا مِنْهُ.فَقَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا قَبْلَ مَبْعَثِ رَسُولِ الله، صلى الله عليه وآله وَسَلَّمَ، بِسَنَتَيْنِ، فَكُنَّا إِذَا قَحِطْنَا، وَقَلَّ عَلَيْنَا الْمَطَرُ نَقُولُ: يَا ابْنَ الْهَيَّبَانِ، اخْرُجْ فَاسْتَسْقِ لَنَا، فَيَقُولُ: لَا وَاللهِ، حَتَّى تُقَدِّمُوا أَمَامَ مَخْرَجِكُمْ صَدَقَةً. فَنَقُولُ: كَمْ؟ فَيَقُولُ: صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ مُدَّيْنِ مِنْ[ (١) ] الزيادة من (م) .[ (٢) ] في (م) و (ص) : «أسيد وهو تصحيف.[ (٣) ] (الهيبان) بفتح الهاء، وتشديد الياء، مفتوحة بعدها باء موحدة، وآخره نون، وأصله صفة، يقال: قطن هيبان، «إذا كان منفوشا» .

Passage Translation

The Departure of the Prophet

He then emerged to the surface of our waterhole, with us around him, and he drank. I swear by Allah he did not get up from his sitting place until the streams passed by. He did this not once, not twice, not thrice. When death approached him, we gathered around him. He said: "O Jewish people, do you think it expelled me from the land of vineyards and wheat to the land of hardship and famine?" They replied: "You know best." He said: "It only expelled me to meet a prophet whose time has come. These lands are his migration, so I will follow him. Do not rush to him when he emerges. O Jewish people, he will be sent with shedding of blood, captivity of the young and women who oppose him. Do not let that prevent you from him." Then he passed away.

Conversion of Youth

That night when Quraizah surrendered, three young boys, in their prime youth, said: "O Jewish people, indeed he was the one who mentioned Ibn al-Hayyaban to you." They asked: "What about him?" The boys confirmed: "Indeed, he has his description." They then descended, embraced Islam, and gave away their wealth, children, and families.

According to Ibn Ishaq, their wealth was in the fortress with the pagans, and when that was disclosed to them, they gave it up.

شَعِيرٍ. فَنُخْرِجُهُ ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى ظَاهِرِ حَرَّتِنَا، وَنَحْنُ معه، فيستسقي، فو الله مَا يَقُومُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ حَتَّى تَمُرَّ الشِّعَابُ. قَدْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ غَيْرَ مَرَّةٍ وَلَا مَرَّتَيْنِ وَلَا ثَلَاثَةٍ.فَحَضَرَتْهُ الْوَفَاةُ، وَاجْتَمَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ. فَقَالَ: يَا مَعْشَرَ يَهُودَ، مَا تَرَوْنَهُ أَخْرَجَنِي مِنْ أَرْضِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْخَمِيرِ إِلَى أَرْضِ الْبُؤْسِ وَالْجُوعِ؟ قَالُوا: أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ. قَالَ: إِنَّمَا أَخْرَجَنِي أَتَوَقَّعُ [ (٤) ] خُرُوجَ نَبِيٍّ قَدْ أَظَلَّ زَمَانُهُ [ (٥) ] ، هَذِهِ الْبِلَادُ مُهَاجَرُهُ، فَأَتَّبِعُهُ، فَلَا تُسْبَقُنَّ إِلَيْهِ إِذَا خَرَجَ. يَا مَعْشَرَ يَهُودَ، فَإِنَّهُ يُبْعَثُ، بِسَفْكِ الدِّمَاءِ، وَسَبْيِ الذَّرَارِيِّ وَالنِّسَاءِ مِمَّنْ يُخَالِفُهُ، فَلَا يَمْنَعُكُمْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ. ثُمَّ مَاتَ. فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي فُتِحَتْ فِيهَا قُرَيْظَةُ، قَالَ أُولَئِكَ الثَّلَاثَةُ الْفِتْيَةُ، وَكَانُوا شُبَّانًا أَحْدَاثًا: يَا مَعْشَرَ يَهُودَ، وَاللهِ إِنَّهُ لَلَّذِي كَانَ ذَكَرَ لَكُمُ ابْنُ الْهَيَّبَانِ. فَقَالُوا: مَا هُوَ بِهِ.قَالُوا: بَلَى وَاللهِ، إِنَّهُ لَصِفَتُهُ [ (٦) ] ثُمَّ نَزَلُوا، فَأَسْلَمُوا وَخَلُّوا أَمْوَالَهُمْ، وَأَوْلَادَهُمْ، وَأَهَالِيهِمْ [ (٧) ] .قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ كَانَتْ أَمْوَالُهُمْ فِي الْحِصْنِ مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَلَمَّا فَتَحَ رُدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ.[ (٤) ] في سيرة ابن هشام: «أتو كف خروج نبي» ، ومعناها: انتظر خروجه واستشعر.[ (٥) ] أظل زمانه: أشرف عليكم وقرب.[ (٦) ] في سيرة ابن هشام: «إنه لهو بصفته» .[ (٧) ] الخبر في سيرة ابن هشام (١: ٢٣٢- ٢٣٣) .
