Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) Mission to Ukaydir bin Abdul Malik:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent Khalid bin Walid to Ukaydir Dumat. It is reported that Khalid was hunting cattle from the traces of prophecy.

Narrated by Ibn Ishaq:

Yazid bin Ruman and Abdullah bin Abi Bakr reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent a man from Kindah named Ukaydir bin Abdul Malik, who was a Christian and ruler of Dumat. The Prophet told Khalid, "You will find him hunting cattle." Khalid left until he reached a spot with a clear, moonlit night. While on a rooftop with his wife, cows approached the palace gate, and his wife remarked on the unusual sight. Khalid replied that he had never seen such a thing before.

His wife asked who would leave behind such an opportunity, to which Khalid responded that no one would. He then descended, took his horse, and called for it to be saddled. He rode with a group from his household, including his brother Hassaan. They went on the chase, where they encountered the horses of the Messenger of Allah, who killed Hassaan. Hassaan was wearing a cloak made of Deebaj Mahus, a type of fine fabric.

[Key Points highlighted in the story: Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sending Khalid bin Walid on a mission, Khalid encountering Ukaydir bin Abdul Malik, the hunting of cattle incident, Khalid's reaction to the sighting, and the tragic encounter resulting in the death of Hassaan.]

The Mission of Khalid ibn al-Walid

In the company of gold, Khalid ibn al-Walid emerged victorious. He was sent to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, before his arrival. Khalid then arrived at Al-Ukaydir to meet the Messenger of Allah. He compensated for his actions, settled on paying the jizyah, and was allowed to return to his village. On his way back, he encountered a man named Bujayr ibn Bujrah who recalled a saying of the Prophet: "You will find him hunting cattle." It wasn't the habit of the cattle to be hunted that night until he was caught in accordance with the words of the Prophet. Blessed is the one who guides every seeker. As for those preventing others in Tabaouk, we have been commanded to engage in jihad.

The Encounter with Dumat al-Jandal

When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went to Medina, he sent Khalid ibn al-Walid with four hundred and twenty horsemen to Dumat al-Jandal, where Ukaydir was located. Upon receiving his instructions, Khalid expressed his concern about Ukaydir's presence in Dumat al-Jandal, considering that they were approaching it with a group of Muslims. The Prophet reassured him by saying that Allah might help him encounter Ukaydir in a manner he did not anticipate. Khalid was advised that when he captures the key, Allah would grant him victory in Dumat al-Jandal.

The Cow Incident

One day, a cow started to scratch itself against the door of the fortress while its owner Ukaydir was drinking and enjoying himself inside the fortress with his wives. One of his wives saw the cow rubbing against the door and the wall. She remarked to Ukaydir that she had not seen tasty meat like this in a long time. Upon hearing this, Ukaydir became furious. He quickly mounted his fully prepared horse, along with his standard and his people, and set out to find the owner of the cow.

Encounter with Khalid ibn al-Walid

As Ukaydir rode in search of the cow's owner, he encountered Khalid ibn al-Walid and his companions. Khalid captured Ukaydir and those with him and took them as captives. Khalid then recited a saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and told Ukaydir that if he set him free, he would guarantee the cow would be opened for him. Ukaydir agreed, and Khalid opened the door. Ukaydir's brother initially refused to open the cow for him, but upon Khalid's intervention, he relented and allowed Khalid to take whatever he wished.

Generosity of Khalid ibn al-Walid

Impressed by Khalid's fairness, Ukaydir offered Khalid a choice to either dictate the terms or let Ukaydir decide. Khalid graciously accepted Ukaydir's offer and gifted them 800 prisoners, 1000 camels, 400 shields, and 400 spears. Ukaydir and his companion, Yuhanna ibn Rumah, then traveled to meet the Prophet Muhammad and were decided upon various issues, leading to a written agreement.

Transmission of Authority

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Al-Abbas, Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, narrated to us Ahmad ibn Abdul Jabbar, who narrated to us Yunus ibn Bukayr, from Sa'd ibn Aws Al-Qaysi, from Bilal ibn Yahya, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to the emigrants in Dumat Al-Jandal. He also sent Khalid ibn Al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Bedouins with him. He said: "Go, for you will find Ukaydir of Dumat Al-Jandal trapping wild game. Capture him and send him to me, but do not kill him. Besiege his people." So, they departed and found Ukaydir of Dumat Al-Jandal as the Prophet (peace be upon him) had described. They captured him and sent him to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while besieging his people. Abu Bakr asked them: "Do you find mention of Muhammad in the Gospel?" They said: "We do not find any mention of him." Abu Bakr replied: "Yes, I swear by the One who holds my soul, there is indeed a mention of him in your Gospel, written in the likeness of a coin, but not as a coin. Look and see." They examined and said: "We find the Devil putting down a barrier with a pen, but we do not understand its meaning." A migrant then asked Abu Bakr: "Are these people disbelievers, O Abu Bakr?" He confirmed, saying: "Yes, and you will also disbelieve." On the day of Musaylimah, that man said to Abu Bakr: "This is what you told us on the day of Dumat Al-Jandal, that we will disbelieve." Abu Bakr replied: "No, but those who come after you will."
