Chapter on the Arrival of al-Hakam ibn Hazn and Description of His Friday Sermon

It was narrated to us by Ibn Qatadah, who told us that Abu Amr ibn Matar narrated to us, who told us that Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Sufi informed us, that al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to us, that Shihab ibn Khirash Abu al-Salt al-Hawshabi narrated to us, from Shuayb ibn Zurayq al-Ta'ifi, who said:

"I was sitting with a man known as al-Hakam ibn Hazn al-Kulfī, who had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He started narrating to us, saying: 'I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the seventh or ninth day. He permitted us to enter, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we came to you so you can supplicate for us with goodness.' He supplicated for us with goodness, instructed us to sit down, and ordered some dates for us. Circumstances were difficult back then. We stayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for days, witnessing Fridays. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then stood leaning on a bow or stick, praised and glorified Allah with gentle and blessed words, and said: 'O people! If you act, you will not be able to bear it every time you are commanded, so strive to do your best and be glad.'"

[1] Al-Hakam ibn Hazn al-Kulfī was from the Banu Tamīm tribe, with a detailed description in Asad al-Ghabah (2:31).

[2] This hadith was recorded by Abu Dawood in the Book of Prayer, in the chapter of a man delivering a sermon leaning on a bow, and also by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (4:212).
