'Umar ibn al-Khattab (RAA) wrote to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas while he was in Qadisiyyah to send Nadlah ibn Mu'awiyah al-Ansari to Hulwan in Iraq to raid its outskirts. Sa'd sent Nadlah with three hundred horsemen and they went until they reached Hulwan in Iraq. They raided its outskirts, seized booty and captives, and started driving the loot and captives until the time was late, and the sun was about to set. Nadlah then took the booty and captives to the foot of a mountain, stood up, called the Adhan, saying "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar." A voice from the mountain responded: "You have praised Allah greatly, O Nadlah." Then he said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah."

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Key Points:

  • The man proclaimed his faith in the oneness of God (Tawhid) and testified that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
  • He mentioned that the religion is the same as what Jesus, son of Mary, brought and that the Hour will rise among his nation.
  • He emphasized the importance of prayer and the success of those who respond to Muhammad.
  • The man, named Durayb ibn Barthama, was appointed by the pious servant Isa (Jesus) to reside in a mountain with a specific purpose.
  • He instructed to convey his greetings to Umar ibn al-Khattab and to inform Umar of certain signs indicating the nearing event.
  • He advised Umar to flee when certain characteristics appear among the followers of Muhammad.
  • He warned against associating inappropriately, neglecting the duty to enjoin good and forbid evil, and seeking knowledge for worldly wealth only.

Translation:

Except for Allah, he said the word of sincerity, O Nadla; then he said: I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. He is the religion that Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) foretold us about, and the Hour will rise among his nation. Then he said: Haste to prayer, he said: Glad tidings for the one who walks towards it and maintains it. Then he said: Haste to success, he said: Successful is the one who responds to Muhammad, and he is the eternal for his nation. He said: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, He said: You have indeed been sincere in sincerity, O Nadla, so Allah has forbidden your body from the Fire. He said: When he finished his call to prayer, we rose, and I said: Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you, are you a leader or a dweller among the jinn or among the righteous servants of Allah? Have you heard your voice, so show us your presence, for we are a delegation of Allah and the delegation of His Messenger (peace be upon him) and the delegation of Umar ibn al-Khattab. The mountain split from Hamma like a finely ground white stone with a dusky head and beard on him. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, so we said: Upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, who are you, may Allah have mercy on you? He said: I am Durayb ibn Barthama, the heir of the pious servant Isa ibn Maryam, who appointed me to reside in this mountain and supplicated for me with longevity until his descent from the heavens, where he will kill the swine, break the cross, and denounce what the Christians have permitted, but when you meet Muhammad (peace be upon him), convey my salutations to Umar from me and tell him, "O Umar, approach and get close, for the matter has drawn near, and test him with these qualities that I have informed you of. O Umar, when these characteristics appear among the nation of Muhammad (peace be upon him), then flee, flee when men rely on other men, and women rely on other women, and they affiliate inappropriately, claim relations that are not theirs, and boast about what they do not own, and the elders do not have mercy on the younger ones, nor do the younger ones honor the older ones. And the matter of enjoining good was abandoned, they were not commanded with it, and they neglected forbidding evil; they did not refrain from it, and their scholars learned knowledge to bring in coins and dinars, the increase of wealth, not found in other copies.

Summary of the passage:

The passage discusses various societal issues and conflicts that were prevalent during a certain period in Islamic history. It describes widespread corruption, deviation from religious principles, exploitation, and abuse. The narrative also mentions the appointment of a specific individual to a leadership position in Iraq, emphasizing the importance of adhering to Islamic practices even in a foreign land.

Translation:

It was a time of violent rain, hot-tempered children, elongated pulpits, desecrated copies of the Quran, embellished mosques, open wrongdoing, extravagant construction, pursuit of pleasures, selling out religion for worldly gains, disregarding human life, severed family ties, and the selling of legal judgments. Usury was widespread, tyranny was a source of pride, wealth was a mark of honor. People would leave their homes only to be dominated by those worse than them. Women would ride in palanquins.

Then, he disappeared from us, and Sa'd wrote about this to Umar. Umar wrote back, "Come, you and whoever is with you among the Emigrants and the Helpers, until you reach this mountain. When you meet him, convey my greetings to him on my behalf, for indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said..."

Abdullah bin Malik reported that Sa'd descended upon that mountain towards Iraq, accompanied by four thousand Emigrants and Helpers. They stayed at the mountain for forty days, where the call to prayer echoed at every prayer time.

Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated from Ismail bin Muhammad bin Al-Fadl bin Muhammad Al-Sha'arani, who narrated from his grandfather, who reported from Muhammad bin Karamah, that Sulaiman bin Ahmad narrated from Muhammad bin Harb Al-Ramli, who narrated from Ibn Lahia, who narrated from Malik bin Al-Azhar, who reported from Nafi', who narrated from Ibn Umar...

The Miraculous Story of Nudayla and Dhu Raybayn

Once, a man named Nudayla called out in a loud voice, "Allahu Akbar!" A voice responded from the mountain, "You have truly magnified, O Nudayla!" Nudayla proclaimed, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," to which the voice replied, "The word of sincerity." Nudayla continued, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The voice declared, "The Prophet has been sent." Nudayla exclaimed, "Come to prayer," and the voice confirmed, "A word accepted." Then Nudayla said, "Come to success," and the voice affirmed, "Eternal triumph for the nation of Ahmad." Nudayla then proclaimed, "Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!" The voice responded, "You have truly magnified." Nudayla declared, "There is no god but Allah," and the voice proclaimed, "A true word that will protect you from the fire."

The Revelation from the Mountain

Suddenly, the mountain split open, revealing a man with a white head and beard. His hair was flowing like a mill's shank, and Nudayla asked him, "Who are you?" The man replied, "I am Dhurayb ibn Barthamla, the righteous servant and the testamentary of Jesus, son of Mary. He prayed for me to have a long life. This mountain was my home until my descent from the heavens. I will demolish the cross, kill the pig, and disown what the Christians have attributed to Jesus, peace be upon him, contrary to the practices of the Prophet. When I pass away, convey this to Umar. When Umar heard this account from Nudayla, he wept profusely."

The Successors of Umar

Nudayla asked who would succeed Umar, to which the reply came, "Abu Bakr." After him, it was Umar. The man advised Umar to remain steadfast and precise in his actions. He emphasized the importance of the characteristics found in the ummah of Muhammad, peace be upon him, and the consequences of deviation.

It is then narrated that Sa'd wrote to Umar about this encounter, to which Umar responded affirmatively, having heard the Prophet mention the mountain and the testamentary of Jesus, peace be upon him. Sa'd stayed by that place for forty mornings, calling the adhan, but no response was heard.

This narration with this chain of transmission resembles a weak hadith at times, and Allah knows best.
