Chapter: The chapter on the arrival of Tamim Al-Dari to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his informing him about the matter of the Jassasah [1] and what he heard from the Antichrist concerning the departure of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the faith of those who believed in him.

Chapter: The Arrival of Tamim al-Dari to the Prophet and Reporting to Him the Issue of Espionage

Abu Sahl Muhammad ibn Nadrawayh al-Marwazi narrated to us that Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Habib informed us, who narrated to us Yahya ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him). Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi informed us, saying, that Abu Sahl Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Qattan narrated to us that Yahya ibn Ja'far al-Marwazi reported to us that Wahb ibn Jarir told us, on the authority of his father, saying, "I heard Ghailan ibn Jarir narrating from al-Sha'bi, from Fatimah bint Qays, who said: Tamim al-Dari came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him that he sailed across the sea, and their ship got lost, causing them to land on an island. They went out searching for water, and they encountered a man dragging his hair. They asked him who he was, and he replied, 'I am the spy.' They inquired, but he refused to inform them, directing them to the island instead. Upon entering, they found a man in chains. He asked them who they were, and they replied, 'People from the Arabs.' He then asked, 'What has that Prophet who emerged among you done?' They responded, 'The people have believed in him, followed him, and affirmed his truthfulness.' He remarked, 'That is good for them.' Then he asked, 'Why don't you tell me about the spring of Zughar?'"

Note:

  1. The spy was so named for spying on news concerning the False Messiah (Al-Dajjal), as reported by Amr ibn al-As that it is the creature mentioned in the Quran.
  2. Spring of Zughar refers to a known town in the southern part of Sham in the Levant region.

بَابُ قُدُومِ تَمِيمٍ الدَّارِيِّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِخْبَارِهِ إِيَّاهُ بِأَمْرِ الْجَسَّاسَةِ [ (١) ] وَمَا سَمِعَ مِنَ الدَّجَّالِ فِي خُرُوجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الله عليه وَسَلَّمَ وَإِيمَانِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِهِأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَهْلٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَضْرَوَيْهِ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ بِنَيْسَابُورَ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ ابن أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ (ح) .وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الله الحافظ، وأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، قَالَا:أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو سَهْلٍ: أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْقَطَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، قَالَ: أَنْبَأَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ غَيْلَانَ بْنَ جَرِيرٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ قَيْسٍ، قَالَتْ: قَدِمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَمِيمٌ الدَّارِيُّ فَأَخْبَرَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ رَكِبَ الْبَحْرَ فَتَاهَتْ بِهِ سَفِينَتُهُ فَسَقَطُوا إِلَى جَزِيرَةٍ فَخَرَجُوا إِلَيْهَا يَلْتَمِسُونَ الْمَاءَ فَلَقِيَ إِنْسَانًا يَجُرُّ شَعْرَهُ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ فَقَالَ: أَنَا الْجَسَّاسَةُ! قَالُوا: فَأَخْبِرْنَا قَالَ لَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ وَلَكِنْ عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذِهِ الْجَزِيرَةِ، فَدَخَلْنَاهَا فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مُقَيَّدٌ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ أَنْتُمْ؟ قُلْنَا:نَاسٌ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ، قَالَ: مَا فَعَلَ هَذَا النَّبِيُّ الَّذِي خَرَجَ فِيكُمْ قُلْنَا قَدْ آمَنَ بِهِ النَّاسُ وَاتَّبَعُوهُ وَصَدَّقُوهُ قَالَ: ذَاكَ خَيْرٌ لَهُمْ، قَالَ: أَفَلَا تُخْبِرُونِي عَنْ عَيْنِ زُغَرَ [ (٢) ] ما[ (١) ] قيل سميت بالجساسة لتجسسها الأخبار للدجال، وجاء عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ أنها دابة الأرض المذكورة في القرآن.[ (٢) ] (عين زغر) بلدة معروفة في الجانب القبلي من الشام.

Story of the Date-Palms of Baysan

When asked what he had done, he said: "So I informed him of it, and he leaped as if to emerge from behind the wall. Then he said: 'What have the palm trees of Baysan done afterward? Have they borne fruit?' We informed him that they had borne fruit, so he leaped in the same manner. Then he said: 'If I were given permission to go out, I would trample all the lands except for At-Taiba.' She [Aisha] said: So he [the Messenger of Allah] went out and informed the people saying: 'This is At-Taiba, and that is the Dajjal.' It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih from Al-Hasan bin Ali Al-Hulwani and others from Wahb bin Jarir."

Transmitters

Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Tariq Muhammad bin Ahmad Al-'Attar said: "Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub informed us, who was told by Al-Hasan bin Ali bin 'Afann, who was informed by Asbat bin Muhammad Al-Qurashi, who heard it from Ash-Sha'abani, who narrated from 'Aamir, who heard it from Fatimah bint Qays. She denied this hadith with additional wording. Ash-Sha'bi said: "I met Muhriz bin Abi Hurayrah and narrated to him, and he said: 'I witnessed that Abu Hurayrah told me about this hadith.' I met 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakr and narrated it to him, and he said: 'You are truthful, and I bear witness that Aisha told me about this hadith, except that she added: 'And Makkah is like it.'" This was also narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman from Fatimah bint Qays.

فَعَلَتْ؟ قَالَ: فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ عَنْهَا فَوَثَبَ وَثْبَةً كَادَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْجِدَارِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ:مَا فَعَلَ نَخْلُ بَيْسَانَ هَلْ أَطْعَمَ بَعْدُ، فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَطْعَمَ، فَوَثَبَ مِثْلَهَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَمَا لَوْ أُذِنَ لِي فِي الْخُرُوجِ لَوَطِئْتُ الْبِلَادَ كُلَّهَا غَيْرَ طَيْبَةَ، قَالَتْ: فَأَخْرَجَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَحَدَّثَ النَّاسَ، فَقَالَ: هَذِهِ طَيْبَةُ، وَذَاكَ الدَّجَّالُ.رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيِّ وَغَيْرِهِ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ [ (٣) ] .أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو طَارِقٍ: مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْعَطَّارُ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عفان حدثنا أسباط ابن مُحَمَّدٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ عَنْ عَامِرٍ عَنْ فَاطِمَةَ بنت قيس فنكر هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ بِزِيَادَاتِ أَلْفَاظٍ فِيهِ، قَالَ الشَّعْبِيُّ: فَلَقِيتُ مُحَرَّرُ بْنُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَقَالَ:صَدَقَ أَشْهَدُ عَلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَنِي بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، فَلَقِيتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: صَدَقْتَ وَأَشْهَدُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ أَنَّهَا حَدَّثَتْنِي بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهَا زَادَتْ فِيهِ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: وَمَكَّةُ مِثْلُهَا [ (٤) ] .قُلْتُ: وَرُوِيَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ فاطمة بنت قيس.[ (٣) ] الحديث في مسلم عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الحلواني، في: ٥٢- كتاب الفتن، (٢٤) باب قصة الجساسة، الحديث (١٢١) ، ص (٤: ٢٢٦٥) ، وأخرجه مسلم قبله الحديث (١١٩) مطوّلا.[ (٤) ] هذه الزيادة في مسلم في الحديث (١١٩) من كتاب الفتن.
