Bab ma ruwiya fil-tiqaa' al-Nabi salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallama bi-Ilyas 'alayhi al-salam

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The chapter on what has been narrated about the encounter of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with Elias, and the chain of this hadith is weak, and Allah knows best.

It was narrated to us by Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz, who said: Abu al-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Sa'id al-Baghdadi narrated to us in Bukhara, who was narrated to by 'Abdullah ibn Mahmud, who was narrated to by 'Abdan ibn Sinan, who was narrated to by Ahmad ibn 'Abdullah al-Raqqi, who was narrated to by Yazid al-'Alawi, who was narrated to by Abu Ishaq al-Fazari, from al-Awza'i, from Mak'hul, from Anas ibn Malik who said:

"We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a journey. We stopped at a place, and we saw a man in the valley supplicating, 'O Allah, make me among the nation of Muhammad, the merciful, the forgiven, the one who will be rewarded.' I climbed up the valley, and I saw a man whose stature was more than three hundred cubits. He asked me, 'Who are you?' I said, 'I am Anas ibn Malik, the servant of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).' He asked, 'Where is he?' I replied, 'He is there listening to your words.' He said, 'Go to him and convey greetings to him and say to him: Your brother Elias conveys greetings to you.' So I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him. He came to meet him, embraced him, and greeted him. Then, they both sat and conversed. The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I do not eat throughout the year except on one day, and this is my day of breaking fast. Let's eat together."

An Account of a Miraculous Event

The Incident: Once, a table came down from the sky to two individuals, bearing bread, fish, and a type of vegetable. They all ate from it and shared it with the narrator, who then prayed the afternoon prayer with them. Afterward, they bid farewell, and the narrator observed one of them ascending into the sky veiled by clouds.

Interpretation and Evaluation

The Narrator's Conclusion: The narrator acknowledges this account as a miraculous event possible by the power of Allah and granted specifically to His Messenger as a sign. However, the narrator notes that the chain of transmission of this narration is weak, as cited by renowned scholars like Al-Hakim and Adh-Dhahabi, indicating the narration may not be authentic. The narrator emphasizes that what is confirmed as miraculous occurrences is sufficient, and success and protection lie solely with Allah.

[Narrated by Al-Hakim, with a weak chain of transmission through Yazid ibn Yazid al-Mawsili as mentioned by Adh-Dhahabi in Al-Mizan (4:441), who discredits the narration as fabricated.]

Final Remarks: Adh-Dhahabi explicitly states that this narration is fabricated and denounces the individual responsible for concocting and transmitting such falsehood. This incident serves as a cautionary tale to be wary of baseless or fabricated narratives in the realm of miraculous events.
