The Story of Muzaynah and Their Request

In this narration, the story of Muzaynah and their request is highlighted, along with the emergence of blessings in the dates given to them by Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

Source of the Narration

It was reported by Abu Al-Husayn ibn Bishran Al-Adl from Baghdad, who narrated from Abu Muhammad Daalaj ibn Ahmad ibn Daalaj, who narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ali, who narrated from Yahya ibn Yahya, who narrated from Hushaym, from Husayn, from Dhaakwan Abu Salih, from Nu'man ibn Muqarrin, stating that he visited the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with three hundred men from Muzaynah. When they wanted to depart, the Prophet instructed Umar to provide provisions for them.

Provision of Dates

Umar stated that he had nothing except some dates which he doubted would be enough for the people. Nonetheless, he was told to go ahead and provide them. Umar then took the people to his home, where he had a date store on the upper floor resembling a camel's hump. The people took what they needed from it, and Nu'man later found that the same amount was still there.

Additional Notes:

  • The narration is found in Musnad Ahmad in the four hundred men variant.
  • This narration can also be found in collections by Imam Ahmad, At-Tabarani, and Abu Nu'aym, narrated by Nu'man ibn Muqarrin.

Encounter with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Isma'il ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, Sa'id ibn 'Amr al-Ash'athi - known as Abu 'Uthman - narrated to us, from 'Abthar, from Husayn ibn Salim, from al-Nu'man, who said: "We came to the Messenger of Allah in the lands of Muzaynah and Juhaynah during some of his affairs. We asked, 'What provisions should we take with us?' He said, 'O 'Umar, provide for them.' 'I have only a handful of dates that will not sustain us,' I said. So, 'Umar - may Allah be pleased with him - led us to a narrow valley to open it, and there we found ripe fresh dates. He said, 'Come and take provisions from these dates,' and we took provisions. I was among the last ones, and when I looked, not a single date was missing from its place, even though four hundred had been taken."

Further Narration

Zaidah narrated to us, from Husayn, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd. Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu al-'Abbas: Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn 'Affan narrated to us, Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, from Zaidah, from Husayn, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, who said: "al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin informed us: 'I came to the Messenger of Allah with four hundred men from Muzaynah and he ordered us. Then he said, 'O 'Umar, provide for them.' 'O Messenger of Allah, I have nothing to give them,' 'Umar said. 'Provide for them,' he repeated, and then he opened a valley containing an amount of dates like blessed camels. We took provisions for four hundred riders, and as I was among the last ones to leave, I turned back and not a single date was missing."

Second Narration

Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Bishran narrated to us, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Amr al-Razi informed us, 'Abbas ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Yala ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us, Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid narrated to us, from Qais ibn Sa'id al-Muzani, who said: "Forty or four hundred men came to the Messenger of Allah asking for food. He said to 'Umar, 'Go and give them.' 'O..."

Translation of a Classical Arabic Text

The Prophet of Allah! It is only a cluster of dates from which I see the children are enticed.

He said: Go and give it to them.

He said: O Messenger of Allah, obedience is based on hearing.

He then took out the key from his bag and opened it, and when he saw a bunch of dates, he said: Take. And each one of us took what he liked, then he turned around. I was among the last of the group, and it seemed as if we had not even picked a single date.

I say: Abu Ubaid said, and his words, "I see the children are enticed," mean that what they have is not sufficient for their enticement, and enticement is the heat of summer.
