Chapter on what has been narrated concerning the arrival of Hamah ibn Hayy ibn Laqis ibn Iblis to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his embracing Islam

It was narrated to us by Abu Al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn ibn Dawud Al-Alawi, may Allah have mercy on him, that Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Hamdawiyyah ibn Sahl Al-Ghazī Al-Marwazī informed us, who was told by Abdullah ibn Hammād Al-Amulī, who was told by Muhammad ibn Abi Ma'shar, who told me on the authority of my father, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, that 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

"While we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a mountain from the mountains of Tihamah, an old man approached holding a staff. He greeted the Prophet (peace be upon him), who returned the greeting. Then he said, 'A group of jinn have converted to Islam. Who are you?' He replied, 'I am Hamah ibn Hayy ibn Laqis ibn Iblis.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then said, 'The only thing between you and Iblis is two parents. How long have you lived?' He said, 'I lived the period of the world except for a few nights during which Cain killed Abel; at that time, I was a boy of a few years, understanding speech and commanding to do what is correct, leading to corruption in food and severing of kinship ties.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'The work of a broken-back elder and an improver youth is certainly evil.' He said, 'Leave me from going back, as I repent to Allah the Almighty, for I was with Noah in his mosque with those who believed from your people. I kept advising him on inviting his people until he wept and made me weep, saying, "I am certainly among the regretful," and I seek refuge in Allah from being ignorant.' He said, 'I told Noah, I am among those who participated in such-and-such, concerning the origins, the beginning, and the end. It was mentioned in some narrations: "And their wealth."

Story of the Martyr in Islamic Tradition

In the blood of the blessed martyr Habil, the son of Adam, do you find a repentance with your Lord?" He said, "O Cain, do good, and do it before remorse and regret. I have read in what Allah, the Almighty, revealed that there is no servant who repents to Allah sincerely except that Allah accepts his repentance. Get up, perform ablution, and prostrate to Allah with two prostrations." He said, "So, from that hour, I did what I was commanded. Then, He called out, 'Raise your head, for your repentance has descended from the sky.' So I prostrated glorifying Allah.

Guidance and Tears

I was with Hud in his mosque with those who believed from his people, and I kept admonishing them about his call to his people until he wept for them and this made me weep. He said, "Indeed, I am one of the regretful ones, and I seek refuge in Allah from being ignorant."

Similarly, I was with Salih in his mosque with those who believed in him from his people, and I continued to admonish them about his call to his people until he wept for them and this made me weep. He said, "I am one of the regretful ones, and I seek refuge in Allah from being ignorant."

Interactions with Prophets

I visited Jacob and was with Joseph in a secure location. I encountered Elijah in the valleys, and I am addressing him now. I met Moses, son of Amram, and he taught me from the Torah. Moses informed me about Jesus, son of Mary, and asked me to convey his peace to him. Jesus said, "If you meet Muhammad, convey my peace to him." The Messenger of Allah then sent his regard to Jesus, and tears streamed down his face. He said, "Upon Jesus be peace as long as the world exists, and peace be upon you, O Cain, for fulfilling the trust."

He replied, "O Messenger of Allah, treat me as Moses did, for he taught me from the Torah. So the Messenger of Allah instructed him: 'When the inevitable event occurs, recite "By the racers" and "Say, He is Allah, [who is] One." And he said, 'Raise to us.' These last two phrases are not in the text provided.

Important Hadith Preservation Note

Amrah said: "You have a need, O Amrah, do not leave our visit." He said: Omar said, "When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away, he did not prohibit it to us. Thus, we are unaware if he is alive or dead."

Verification and Narration Details

Abu Mashar al-Madani: The elders have narrated from him except that the scholars of hadith weaken it. This hadith has been narrated from a stronger perspective, and Allah knows best.

Sources and Attribution

This hadith was narrated by Abdullah ibn Imam Ahmad in the Zawaid al-Zuhd and al-Aqili in the Da'if (1:98) with the comment: "It has no origin." Also, Ibn Mardawayh in the Tafsir through the route of Abi Salamah Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, one of the weak narrators, from Muhammad ibn Abi Mashar, from Abdul Aziz ibn Abi Bajir, one of the abandoned narrators. These three from Abu Mashar, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, and Abu Nu'aim, in Al-Hilya and Al-Dalail, and Al-Mustanfar in Al-Sahaba, and Al-Fakihi in the Book of Mecca. The route of Al-Bayhaqi is the strongest route, and Ibn al-Jawzi included it in Al-Mawdu'at, and Al-Suyuti in Al-La'ali Al-Masnu'a (1:174), and al-Aqili in the biography of Ishaq ibn Bishr al-Kahili, the liar. Refer to Al-La'ali Al-Masnu'a for fabricated hadiths. Through this compilation of sources, it is known that the hadith is weak.
