Chapter about the Issues Raised by a Group of Jews and Confirming their Accuracy

It was narrated to us by Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan ibn Forak - may Allah have mercy on him, narrated to us Abdullah ibn Ja'far who narrated to us Yunus ibn Habib who narrated to us Abu Dawud who narrated to us Abdul Hameed ibn Bahram from Shahri ibn Hawshab, who said: Ibn Abbas told me that a group of Jews came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, one day and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Tell us about some things that only a prophet knows." He said: "Ask about anything, but pledge allegiance to Allah, and what Jacob imposed upon his sons when I inform you of something you know to be true, you must pledge allegiance to me for Islam." They said: "We agree." He said: "Then ask me about whatever you wish." They said: "Tell us about four issues we inquire you about: Inform us about the food that Israel had made forbidden upon himself before the Torah was revealed, inform us about the water of a man, how the male offspring is born from it until it becomes male, and how the female is born until it becomes female. And inform us how this thing is during sleep? And who is your guardian among the angels?" He said: "Upon you is the covenant of Allah, if I tell you, you must pledge allegiance to me, give him whatever Allah wills of the covenant and pact." I swear by Allah who revealed the Torah to Moses, do you know that Israel -Jacob- became severely ill, his illness prolonged, so he vowed to Allah a vow: If Allah cures him from his illness, he will forbid the most beloved drink to him, and the most beloved food to him, and his most beloved drink was the milk of camels, and his most beloved food was the meat of camels?" They said: "Yes, Allah willing." So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "O Allah, bear witness over them." He said: "I swear by Allah."

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

In the name of Allah, the One besides whom there is no other deity. He is the One who sent down the Torah upon Moses.

Do you know that the water of a man is thick and white, while the water of a woman is yellow and thin? So, whichever overcomes the other, the child will resemble accordingly, by the permission of Allah. If the man's water overcomes the woman's, the child will be male, by the permission of Allah. And if the woman's water overcomes the man's, the child will be female, by the permission of Allah.

They said: "Yes, O Allah's Messenger." He said: "O Allah, be a witness."

He then asked: "Do you swear by Allah, who sent down the Torah to Moses, that this Prophet sleeps while his heart does not sleep?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "O Allah, bear witness against them."

He continued: "I adjure you by Allah, who sent down the Torah upon Moses, do you know that this Prophet, his eyes sleep but his heart does not?" They replied: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "O Allah, bear witness against them."

He then said: "Tell me, who is your ally among the angels? Is it Gabriel who inspires you, or will he forsake you?" They said: "Gabriel is our ally." He said: "Had it been another angel besides him who was your ally, we would have followed you." They asked him: "What prevents you from believing in him?" They replied: "He is our enemy among the angels." To which Allah revealed: "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel, indeed he brought it down to your heart by Allah's permission..." till the end of the verse.

Furthermore, the revelation descended "in stages in response to anger upon anger, and for the disbelievers, is a humiliating punishment." [Quran 2:90].
