Chapter on the Testimony of the Infant and the Mute to Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) Regarding the Message, If the Narration in it Is Authentic

It was narrated to us by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan, who informed us that Ahmad ibn Ubaid al-Saffar narrated to us, who was informed by Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Kudaymi, who was informed by Sha'shunah ibn Ubaid Abu Muhammad al-Yamami. We departed from Aden towards a village called Lahrdah.

Ma'ridh ibn Abdullah ibn Ma'ridh ibn Mu'ayqib al-Yamani informed me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, who said: I performed Hajj at the time of Farewell Pilgrimage, and I entered a house in Mecca where I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and his face was like the moon. I heard from him something marvelous: a man came to him with a newborn boy and the Messenger of Allah asked him, "O boy, who am I?" The boy replied, "You are the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet said, "You have spoken the truth; may Allah bless you." The boy did not speak again until he grew up, and my father said we used to call him "Mubarak al-Yamamah."

Sha'shunah ibn Ubaid added: "I used to pass by Ma'mar, but I never heard this narration from him."

It was also narrated to us by Abu Sa'd Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Uthman al-Zahid, on the authority of Abu al-Hasan, and this narration contains the unreliable narrator Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Kudaymi. He was known for narrating fabricated hadiths and might have fabricated over a thousand hadiths from the weak narrators. Ad-Daraqutni inquired about him and noted several of his fabrications. Ibn Araq mentioned him, as well as Ibn Adi and Ibn Hibban.

Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Blessing a Newborn

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Jumay' al-Ghassani narrated to us from al-Abbas ibn Mahbub ibn Uthman ibn Ubayd Abu al-Fadl, who narrated from his father, who in turn narrated from his grandfather, saying: "I had the honor of performing the Farewell Pilgrimage. I entered a house in Mecca and saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with a face like a full moon. I heard him expressing amazement after a man from the tribe of Yamama brought a newborn wrapped in a cloth to him. The Prophet asked the boy, 'Who am I?' The boy replied, 'You are the Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet then said, 'May Allah bless you.' After this, the boy did not speak."

This narration was also reported by Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Khalaf ibn Muhammad al-Muqri al-Qazwini, who narrated it from Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas ibn Mahbub ibn Sha'shoonah. Our teacher Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz mentioned it, reporting from Abu al-Hasan, who narrated from Ibn Abbas al-Warraaq, who narrated from Ahmad ibn Khalaf, saying: "Abu Abdullah informed me, on the authority of a trustworthy person from our companions, that Abu Umar al-Zahid said: 'When I entered Yemen, I visited the grave of Sha'shoonah due to a specific hadith I inquired about and found whips hanging there. I said: 'This hadith has a chain going back to the people of Kufa, but it is a mursal isnad, in contrast to the time of the conversation.'" [Ibn Kathir transmitted it (6:159), attributing it to the author, and said: "Its chain is ghareeb."] Abu al-Qasim Zaid ibn Abi Hashim al-Alawi in Kufa reported to us from Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Duhaym, who narrated from Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Absi, who narrated from Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, from al-A'mash, from Shamir ibn Atiyya, from some of his elders, saying: "The Prophet, peace be upon him,..."

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

An infant boy was brought who had come of age but had never spoken. He said, "Who am I?" They said, "You are the Messenger of Allah."

It was narrated to us by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, who narrated to us Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad Ibn Ya'qub, who narrated to us Ahmad Ibn Abd Al-Jabbar, who narrated to us Yunus Ibn Bukayr, from Al-A'mash, from Shamir Ibn Atiyya, from some of his elders who said: A woman brought her son to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who was unable to speak. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, my son has never spoken since he was born." The Messenger of Allah said, "Bring him closer." She brought him closer, and he asked, "Who am I?" The Prophet replied, "You are the Messenger of Allah."

In the narration by Ibn Kathir in "Al-Tarikh," it has been reported as Al-Hafiz Al-Thahabi mentioned. The hadith is Mursal (a type of hadith) narrated by Shamir Ibn Atiyya, the Kufan, by Al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Khalafun, and authenticated by Ibn Nimayr, Ibn Mu'in, and Al-Ajli.
