Chapter on Informing the Companion of Al-Junbadhah about His Act

In what has been narrated about informing the companion of al-junbadhah about his act, it has been established that Ibn Umar reported that they were cautious in speech and behavior, fearing that the Quran might be revealed concerning what they said and did.

  • Abu Saeed ibn Abi Amr
  • Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya’qub
  • Al-Abbas ibn Muhammad
  • Shadhan
  • Huraym ibn Sufyan

Bayan reported from Qais, from Abu Shahm, saying: "A woman in Medina passed by me and I took hold of her sleeve. The next morning, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was giving allegiance to the people. I went to him, and he did not give me allegiance. He said, 'The one with the junbadhah yesterday?' I said, 'I swear by Allah, I will not return.' So, he gave me allegiance."

Abu Hamid Ahmed ibn Khalaf Al-Sufi Al-Asfara'eeni reported it. Muhammad ibn Dawud ibn Mas'ud Al-Jawsiqani narrated, through Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Suleiman, and Muhammad ibn Aban Al-Wasiti that Yazid ibn Ata narrated from Bayan ibn Bishr from Qais ibn Abi Hazim from Abu Shahm who said: "I saw a young girl in some parts of Medina, so I held her hand to her waist. The next day, the people came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to give allegiance, and I extended my hand saying: 'Give me allegiance, O Messenger of Allah!' He said, 'Were you the one with the junbadhah yesterday?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, give me allegiance, I swear by Allah I will never return.' He said, 'Yes, then.'"

Abu Tahir Al-Faqih reported from Abu Bakr Al-Qattan who narrated from Ahmed ibn Yusuf. This hadith was also recorded by Al-Hakim and verified by Ibn Saad, as found in "Al-Khasais Al-Kubra" (2:103).

Transmission of Hadith

The Sulami narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firyabi reported to us that Sufyan mentioned and Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, reporting from Abu Al-Qasim Sulaiman ibn Ahmad al-Tabarani, who narrated from Ali ibn Abdul Aziz, who narrated from Abu Nuaym, who narrated from Sufyan, from Abdullah ibn Dinar, from Ibn Umar, who said: “We used to restrict our speech and our relaxation in front of our women during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) out of fear that something might be revealed in their presence. But when he passed away, we spoke freely and relaxed.” This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Nuaym.

Lack of Freedom in Speech and Relaxation

In another narration by Al-Firyabi: “We used to restrict our speech and our relaxation in front of our women for fear that the Quran might be revealed through us. But when the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, we spoke freely.” This narration is reported by Bukhari in his Sahih from Abu Nuaym.

Restriction Out of Fear

Abu Al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad Al-Muqri informed us that Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq reported to us that Yusuf ibn Ya'qub narrated to us that Ahmed ibn Isa informed us that Ibn Wahb said: “Amro ibn Al-Harith reported to us from Sa'eed ibn Abi Hilal, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa'd Al-Sa'eedi, that he said: 'By Allah, one of us used to refrain from certain things with his wife while both of them were under one garment, out of fear that some verses of the Quran might be revealed in that situation.'” This hadith is reported by Bukhari in his Book of Marriage, Chapter of Advising in Favor of Women, Hadith 5187 and Al-Imam Ahmad in his Musnad.
