Bab - The Narrative Concerning the Man Who Reported His Poetry in Complaint of His Son

Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Alawi informed us, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn 'Amir al-Nahawandi has also narrated, from Abu Dujanah Ahmad ibn al-Hakam al-Ma'afiri who narrated from 'Ubayd ibn Khalasah, who narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar al-Madani, from al-Munkadir ibn Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from his father, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, my father intends to take his wealth." The Messenger of Allah replied, "Summon him to me." The man did so, and the Messenger of Allah said to him: "Your son claims that you take his wealth." The man replied, "Ask him if it is anything but what I spend on his aunts, relatives, or for myself and my family." At that moment, Jibril descended and said, "O Messenger of Allah! The old man has said something to himself that his ears did not hear." The Messenger of Allah asked, "You said something to yourself that your own ears did not hear?" The man replied, "Allah continues to increase us in insight and certainty, indeed!"

Then the Messenger of Allah said, "Recite what you said." So he began reciting: "I reared you when you were young... You are raised with what I earn for you and provide."

Poetry Translation

When a night of illness narrow upon you, I do not sleep
I stay awake on your behalf due to your sickness
Should you be afraid of tragedy befalling you?
For you should know that death is inevitable for you
As if I am the one who is hit on your behalf
By the same that you were struck with instead of me
So my eyes fill with tears
When you reached old age and the end that has shown itself to you
To the extent to which I had hopes in you
You made my punishment severe and wicked
As if you are the gracious and generous one
Would that you did not disregard the rights of my fatherhood
As a neighboring neighbor would do
He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wept
And he took his son's hand and said:
"You and your property belong to your father."
