Bab Ma Ja'a Fi Al-Barakah Al-Lati Ẓaharat Fi At-Ta'am Al-Ladhi Quḍḍima Fi Dāri Abi Bakrin Aṣ-Ṣiddīq Raḍiya Allah 'Aṉhu 'Ilá 'Aḍyāfihi Fi Zamani An-Nabiyyi Ṣallá Allahu 'Alayhi Wasallam

Abū ʿAbd Allah Al-Hāfiẓ informed us, Abū An-Naḍr Al-Faqih narrated to us, Abū ʿAbd Allah: Muḥammad ibn Naṣr told us, ʿAbd Allah ibn Muʿādh narrated to us, Al-Muʿṭamir informed us, my father narrated to me from Abū ʿUthmān that ʿAbd Ar-Raḥmān ibn Abi Bakrin said:

"The Companions of the Ṣuffah were poor people, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once said: 'Whoever has food for two should invite a third, and whoever has food for four should invite a fifth and a sixth, or something similar.' Abu Bakr brought food for three, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr ate as ten, three for him, one each for his father, mother, and himself; I do not know if he mentioned 'and my wife' and 'a servant between our house and my father's house.' Abu Bakr dined with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he stayed until the night prayer, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dozed off, after part of the night had passed, Abu Bakr left as Allah willed.

His wife said to him: 'What kept you from your guests?' or she said, 'your guest?' He replied: 'Or what prevented you from hosting them?' She said: 'They refused to leave until you came; they had offered to leave, and you outlasted them.' He said: 'So I left and hid away.' The Prophet said: 'O Ghunthar! Offer food, and swear by Allah, no.'"

It is said: Ghunthar is a heavy, bulky person, ignorant, Ghadaḍa (offer food) and Sabba (swear) - Ghadaḍa means to cut off part of the nose and other limbs, and Sabba means to curse.

Feeding the Prophet

Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "By Allah, we never took a morsel of food that was increased more from below it than it, until we were full and it became more than it was." Abu Bakr looked at the food and saw that it remained the same or increased. He said to his wife, "O sister of the Banu Furass! What is this?" She replied, "By Allah, this is now more than it was before by three times." Abu Bakr ate from it and said, "That was only from the devil, meaning his deception." Then he took a morsel and carried it to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and it was with him in the morning."

Signs of Prophethood

Between us and a group, there was a promise. When the time elapsed, we recognized twelve men with every man among them, and Allah knows best how many were with each man except that he sent with them. They all ate from it together as it has been narrated in Sahih Bukhari from Musa ibn Isma'il from Mu'tamir and in Sahih Muslim from Ubaydullah ibn Ma'adh.

Note:

  • أَقْرُّ اللهُ عَيْنَهُ: Allah refreshed his eye, meaning He cooled his tear, because the tear of joy is cool, while the tear of sadness is hot.
