Chapter on Abu Huraira's Sign of Retention

In this chapter, we discuss the indication by Abu Huraira Al-Dowsi, may Allah be pleased with him and others, regarding the factors for retention, his responses, and the actualization by Allah Almighty of the sayings of the Messenger of Allah - peace and blessings be upon him - and the traces of Prophethood within them.

Narration Chain:

  • Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Al-Hasan Al-Qadi informed us
  • Hajib ibn Ahmad Al-Tusi informed us
  • Muhammad ibn Yahya informed us
  • Abdul Razzaq informed us
  • Ma'mar narrated from Al-Zuhri from Al-A'raj in regards to Allah's saying: "Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance..." [Quran 2:159] (1)

Abu Huraira's Response:

Abu Huraira said: "You often say that Abu Huraira narrates a lot from the Prophet, peace be upon him, but by Allah, the meeting will be held. And you say, 'Why do the emigrants and Ansar not narrate these hadiths from the Messenger of Allah?' My companions among the emigrants were preoccupied with their businesses in the markets, and my companions among the Ansar were preoccupied with their lands and cultivating them. And I was a needy man, attending the company of the Messenger of Allah when everyone was absent, memorizing when they forgot. One day, the Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him - addressed us, saying: 'Whoever spreads his garment until I finish my speech, then gathers it, will never forget anything he heard from me.' So, I spread my garment or my sheet, listened to him, gathered it, and by Allah, I did not forget anything I heard from him. By Allah, if it were not in the Book of Allah, I would never narrate it to you." Then he recited: "Indeed, those who conceal the verse..." (Quran 2:159)

(1) This refers to the noble verse 159 of Surah Al-Baqarah (2).

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Reported by Muslim: In Sahih Muslim, it was narrated by Abd ibn Humayd from Abd al-Razzaq, extracting it from other perspectives as well. In our book al-Madkhal, we narrated what was reported from Abu Huraira regarding his supplication and question seeking knowledge that should not be forgotten, and the Prophet's assurance upon his supplication. Also what was reported from Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah and others in his verification.

Reported by Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub informed us, reporting from al-Rabi', who said: al-Shafi'i mentioned: Abu Huraira is the most memorizing in narrating Hadith in his era.

Other References: Muslim also recorded it from Qutaibah ibn Sa'id, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, and Zuhayr ibn Harb, all from Sufyan, from al-Zuhri, from al-A'raj. Bukhari also included it in his collection in the book of al-I'tisam, in the chapter on the proof against those who claim that the Prophet's rulings were explicit.
