Bab Ma Ja'a Fi Ash-Shab Al-Ladhi Lam Yanfatih Lisanuhu Bil-Shahadah 'Inda Al-Mawt, Hatta Raditat 'Anhu Walidatuhu

It was narrated to us by Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Saeed ibn Abi 'Amr, who said: narrated to us Abu Al-'Abbas: Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us Yahya ibn Abi Talib, who informed us from 'Abdul-Wahhab ibn 'Ata', who narrated to us from Abu Al-Warqa', from 'Abdullah ibn Abi Awfah, who said: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Verily, there is a young man who is generous with himself, but is unable to say La ilaha illa Allah. He tried but couldn't say it." So he stood up, and we stood up with him until he entered where the young man was. He said, "O young man, say La ilaha illa Allah." The young man replied, "I cannot." The Prophet asked, "Why?" The young man responded, "Whenever I try to say it, it as though something stops me." The Prophet asked, "Why?" The young man said, "Because of my disobedience to my mother." The Prophet asked, "Is your mother alive?" The young man said, "Yes." The Prophet instructed, "Bring her to me." When she came, he asked her, "Is this your son?" She replied, "Yes." He then asked her, "Would you intercede for him if there were a great fire and you were told to intercede for him?"

[Note: Abu Al-Warqa' is Fu'id ibn 'Abd ar-Rahman al-'Atar. Al-Bukhari mentioned in Al-Kabir (7:132), "I see Abu Al Warqa' reporting from Ibn Abi Awfa: weak in Hadith, Ahmad abandoned him." Muslim ibn Ibrahim stated, "I entered upon him and his lady servant was fanning him with a fan." Yahya ibn Ma'een considered him weak, and Al-'Uqaili mentioned in Al-Du'afa (3:460) and Ibn Hibban criticized him (2:203), saying, "He narrates oddities from prominent individuals and reports ambiguities from Ibn Abi Awfa, hence, it is not permissible to cite evidence from him."]

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Will you intercede for him?" She said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then bear witness for him and bear witness with me that you are pleased with him." So she said: "O Allah, I bear witness that I am pleased with You, and I bear witness that Your Messenger is pleased with him." He then said: "O young man, say: La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah)." The man said: "La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu." The Prophet repeated it three times: "Alhamdulillah alladhi anqadak bi minan-nar."

It is mentioned by al-Haythami in Majma' al-Zawa'id (8:148) that it is narrated by at-Tabarani and Ahmad in a concise manner, and it includes Abu al-Warraqa who is of questionable reliability.

Arabic:
