Chapter on the Issues Concerning the Jews and their Knowledge of the Prophet's Truthfulness in His Prophethood

Reported to us by Muhammad Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz, who narrated to us Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, who narrated to us Al-Hasan ibn Mukram, who narrated to us Yazid ibn Harun, who reported to us Shu'bah ibn Al-Hajjaj from 'Amr ibn Murrah from 'Abdullah ibn Salamah from Safwan ibn 'Asal, who said: A Jew said to his companion: "Let's go to this Prophet and ask him." The other replied: "Do not call him a Prophet for if he hears you say this, a Prophet is someone who has four eyes." So they went to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and asked him about the saying of Allah Almighty: 'Verily, We gave Moses nine clear signs.' He replied: 'Do not associate anything with Allah, do not kill a soul which Allah has made forbidden, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not practice magic, do not walk with a lie to the ruler lest he kills you, do not consume usury, do not flee from the battlefield, do not accuse a chaste person of adultery.' Shu'bah doubted the authenticity of this part. And specifically concerning you, O Jews, do not transgress in the Sabbath." They kissed his hands and feet and said: "We testify that you are a Prophet." He asked: "What prevents you from embracing Islam?" They said: "David asked his Lord for his progeny to never cease being Prophets, and we fear that if we follow you, the Jews will kill us."
