Story of Umm Waraqah

In a narration about Umm Waraqah, it is mentioned that she was able to bear witness, and thus, she was called to testify during the time of Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him.

Abu Al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad Al-Muqri reported to us that Ibn Al-Hammami from Baghdad narrated to us, who was informed by Ahmad ibn Salman, who was told by Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Shakir, who reported from Abu Nu'aim, who was told by Al-Walid ibn Jumay', who said: my grandmother told me about Umm Waraqah bint Abdullah ibn Al-Harith. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would visit her and call her "the witness." She had memorized the Quran and during the Battle of Badr, she asked permission from the Prophet (peace be upon him) to come out and treat their wounds, hoping for martyrdom. He replied, "Indeed, Allah has guided you to martyrdom," and named her "the witness," instructing her to lead the people of her household in prayer.

Umm Waraqah had a female servant and a male servant whom she had adopted. They conspired against her and killed her during the reign of Umar. It was said that her maid and the male servant killed her and fled, but were captured and crucified in Medina, becoming the first crucified individuals in the city. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, authenticated the Prophet's words, saying: "Go visit the martyress."

Translation: A Woman's Request to Join Battle of Badr

It was narrated that Um Waraqah bint Nawfal, the grandmother of Abdur Rahman bin Khallad al-Ansari, told the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during the Battle of Badr, "O Messenger of Allah, grant me permission to fight alongside you in this battle. I want to nurse the wounded so that perhaps Allah may grant me martyrdom." The Prophet replied, "Stay in your home, for Allah will grant you martyrdom." Um Waraqah was hence known as the female martyr. She had memorized the Quran and requested the Prophet to allow her to appoint a muezzin in her house, which he permitted. She had a male servant and a female slave who plotted against her, suffocated her with a scarf at night until she died. They buried her secretly. The following morning, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked if anyone possessed knowledge of these two individuals or had seen them, to bring them forth. They were identified, brought before Umar, and were crucified, becoming the first to be crucified in Medina.
