Hadith by Jafar

Ja'far ibn Awn narrated to us that Qays ibn Abi Hazim reported, saying: "We complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, while he was covered in a garment, leaning against the Ka'bah. We said, 'Won't you ask Allah for help for us? Don't you seek help for us from Allah?' He sat up, facing us, and said, 'By Allah, people before you used to be taken and a pit would be dug for them, then they would be placed in it. A saw would be brought and put on his head, cutting him into two halves. This would not make him abandon his religion. Or, his flesh would be combed with iron combs that would remove his flesh from his bones, and this also would not make him abandon his religion. Verily, Allah will complete this matter until a traveler from San'a to Hadramawt will fear none but Allah, or the wolf as regards his sheep, but you people are in a hurry.'

This narration by Jafar was recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim in their authentic collections from the hadith of Yahya al-Qattan.

Translation of Classical Arabic Text

Narrated by Abu Sa'id ibn Abi 'Amr: Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub informed us that al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman narrated to him that ash-Shafi'i - may Allah have mercy on him - said: Allah has made His religion, with which He sent His Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), prevalent over all other religions by making it clear to everyone who hears of it that it is the truth, and that whatever differs from it among other religions is falsehood. He has also made it clear that the consensus of polytheism is two religions: the religion of the People of the Book and the religion of the idolaters. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) subdued the idolaters until they embraced Islam willingly or unwillingly, and he fought some of the People of the Book until they accepted Islam, while others paid the jizyah, being humbled. The ruling of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) thus prevailed over them. This is the complete establishment of the religion.
