Chapter on the Testimony of the Dead to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the Message and in Leadership after Him

The narration on this matter is sound and established, indicating a clear evidence from the signs of prophethood.

Narrated by Yahya bin Said from Said bin Al-Musayyib:

Zaid bin Kharja Al-Ansari, from the clan of Harith bin Al-Khazraj, passed away during the time of Uthman ibn Affan. As he was being shrouded in his garment, a sound was heard coming from his chest. He then began speaking, saying: "Ahmad, Ahmad, in the first scripture. Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq was truthful, even though he deemed himself weak. Umar ibn Al-Khattab was strong and trustworthy in the first scripture, and he spoke the truth. Uthman ibn Affan followed their path. Four have passed and two remain; adversity will come, intense craving will consume the weak. The hour will arise, and news will reach you from your army regarding the Well of Aris and what is with it."

Yahya said:

Said narrated that a man from the Khathamah tribe passed away, and as he was being shrouded in his garment, a sound was heard from his chest. He then spoke, saying: "Verily, the brother of Banu Harith bin Al-Khazraj spoke the truth."

Al-Hasan narrated to us al-Qa'nabi, and he mentioned it with its chain of narration similar to this, and this chain is authentic and has corroborating evidence. Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran informed us in Baghdad, Abu Ali, al-Husayn ibn Safwan narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated to us, Abu Muslim Abd al-Rahman ibn Yunus narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us, from Ismail ibn Abi Khalid, who said: Yazid ibn al-Nu'man ibn Bashir came to the gathering of al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman with a letter from his father al-Nu'man ibn Bashir.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, from Nu'man ibn Bashir to Umm Abdullah bint Abi Hashim, peace be upon you. I praise to you the One God who there is no deity except Him. You wrote to me to correspond with you regarding the matter of Zaid ibn Kharija. It is known that he was struck with a pain in his throat that day, being one of the most righteous among the people of Madinah. He passed away between the Dhuhr and Asr prayers. We laid him down on his back, covered him with a shroud and a garment. A visitor came to me while I was making tasbih (praising Allah) after Asr and said: Zaid has spoken after his death. I hurried to him, and some people from the Ansar were with him. He was saying or it was said on his tongue...

... "The more moderate among the people who were not concerned about censure in the sight of Allah Almighty, he did not order the people to let their strong ones eat the weak. Abdullah, the Amir al-Mu'minin, spoke the truth, he spoke the truth. This was in the first scripture. He then said: "Uthman, the Amir al-Mu'minin, while pardoning people for many sins, two nights passed and it was as four. Then people disagreed, and some ate others without any system. The markets were opened, and the believers were taken care of. They said: It is the Book of Allah and His decree, O people, obey your Amir, listen and obey. Whoever turns away, do not blame him. The decree of Allah is predestined. Allah is the Greatest. These are Paradise and Hellfire - [they are] the Prophets, the truthful ones. Peace be upon you, Abdullah ibn Rawahah. Did you feel the pain for his father and Sa'd, the two who were martyred on the day of Uhud? No, it was a burning fire, uprooting the bones, calling to whoever turns away and retreats, gathering and calculating. Then he lowered his voice, and I asked the people about what he had said earlier, and they said: ...

Encounter with the Prophet and Abu Bakr

Once, we heard him say, "Listen, listen!" Some of us looked at each other when suddenly a voice came from under the clothes. The man revealed his face and exclaimed, "This is Ahmad, the Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy and blessings of Allah." Then he said, "Abu Bakr, the truthful, the trustworthy, the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, was weak in body but strong in the matters of Allah. He spoke the truth, he spoke the truth, and he had insight into the early scriptures."

Transmission of the Narration

We were informed by Abu Nasr ibn Qatada, who was told by Abu Amr ibn Nujayd, narrated by Ali ibn Al-Husayn ibn Al-Junayd, from Al-Mu'afa ibn Sulayman, reported by Zuhayr - meaning Ibn Muawiya - narrated by Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid. He mentioned it with its chain, and the narrative was expanded in the middle, occurring about two complete years after the caliphate of Uthman. Towards the end, he said, "Two nights passed, and there remained four. The two years that have passed since Uthman's caliphate... I continued to keep the remaining four intervals, expecting what was to come, which included the upheaval of the people of Iraq, their dissent, incitement of the clamorous, and their reproach of their leader, Waleed Ibn Uqba. May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon him."

Valid Chain of Narration

I said, "This is a valid chain of narration, and it was also narrated by Habib ibn Salim from Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, mentioning the well of Aris as in the narrative of Ibn al-Musayyib. The incident included the Prophet taking a ring and passing it down to Abu Bakr, followed by Umar, then Uthman. After six years of his caliphate, it fell into the well of Aris. At that point, the workers changed, and the causes of discord emerged, as mentioned in the narration attributed to Zaid ibn Haritha, according to what Al-Bukhari stated in his book of history."

First Narrative: A Testimony during the Battle of Siffin or Camel

Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran narrated to us, Hussein ibn Safwan informed us, Ibn Abi Dunya told us, Khalaf ibn Hasham al-Bazzar narrated to us, Khaled al-Tahhan told us, from Husayn, from Abdullah ibn Ubayd al-Ansari, that a man from the slain of Musaylimah spoke, saying: "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar the Martyr, and Uthman the Merciful. I do not know what he said to Umar."

Second Narrative: A Witness during the Battle of Siffin or Camel

Abu Said ibn Abi Umar informed us, Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub said, Yahya ibn Abi Talib narrated to us, Ali ibn Asim informed us, Husayn ibn Abdur-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Ubayd al-Ansari said: While they were picturing the slain on the day of Siffin or the Camel, a man from the Ansar among the slain spoke and said: "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar the Martyr, and Uthman the Merciful," then he fell silent. Khaled al-Tahhan memorized this better than Ali ibn Asim, and he is more trustworthy. Allah knows best. (Ibn Kathir in Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah 6:157-158)
