Babu ma zahara fi mazadatayi al-mar'ati bi barakati duaa'i Rasulillah (1) salallahu 'alayhi wasallam min al-ziyadati wa atharil-nubuwwa.

Some ways of this hadith have passed in the later stages of the Battle of Khaybar. Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafidh informed us, Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq al-Faqih dictated this in the year thirty-three. Muhammad ibn Ayyub narrated to us, Abu al-Walid informed us, Muslim ibn Zarir said: I heard Abu Rajaa saying: Imran ibn Husayn narrated that he was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on a journey. They camped at night until at the break of dawn, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted his horse, his companions still drowsy until the sun rose. The first to wake up from his sleep was Abu Bakr, and no one would wake the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) up from his sleep until he woke up himself. Umar woke up and sat by his head and began to recite the Takbir and raise his voice until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) woke up. When he woke up and the sun had risen, he said: "Set out." So they journeyed until the sun was high and stopped to pray. A man separated from the group and did not join them in prayer. When he left, the Prophet asked him why he did not pray with them. The man replied that he was in a state of impurity. The Prophet commanded him to perform Tayammum with soil and then pray. The Messenger of Allah hurried the man in performing the necessary steps before prayer and while they were extremely thirsty, the man was asked to go and search for water. As they were walking, they saw a woman whose legs were tied with ropes between two camel humps. They asked her, "Where is..."

Translation

Water? She said: Yes, yea. No water. So we asked: How far is it from your family to the water? She said: One day and one night. So we said: Go to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. She said: Who is the Messenger of Allah? We did not intervene in her affairs until we met the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and she narrated to him what she had told us except that she informed him that she was "Mutimah." So, the Prophet ordered her to be engaged to the bond of two high necks of a camel, and forty men drank until they were satisfied. We filled all kinds of containers we had and watered our riding animals, although a camel nearly died from drinking too much water. Then he said to us: "Bring what you have." So we gathered for her from bread and dates until it was enough for her. He said: Go and feed your family, and know that we did not decrease anything from your water. When she came to her family, she said: I have met the most knowledgeable person among people, or he is a prophet as they claim. Allah Almighty guided that's the edge of hardship with that woman, so she embraced Islam, and her family did too.

This narration is reported by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih from Abu Al-Walid, and narrated by Muslim in another context from Salim ibn Umayr.

Notes

  • (٥) In original Arabic text: "Hale, Hale." It means something like "Yes, yes" and conveys a sense of urgent need for water.
  • (٦) The phrase "Falamm numallikha min amriha shay'an" means "We did not interfere in her affairs until she was able to manage them herself."
  • (٧) "Mutimah" refers to a woman who is a widow with young children.
  • (٨) "Famajja fil 'azlaawainil 'uliwain" describes the method of feeding water to a thirsty camel. The water is poured into the lower part of the mouth with a leather bucket and then allowed to flow down to the upper part of the mouth for the camel to drink properly.
  • (٩) "Waghasalna sahibana" means "We washed our companion," indicating they helped the camel driver to wash himself and prepare for prayer.
  • (١٠) "Tandarju min al-ma'a" describes the camel nearly choking from drinking too much water.
  • (١١) "As-Sirm" refers to grouped verses.
