Chapter on What Was Mentioned Regarding Moistening the Mouths of Breastfed Infants on the Day of Ashura

It was narrated to us by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan, who was informed by Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, who narrated to us from Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Sukkari, who narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar al-Qawariri, who narrated from Ulayyah bint al-Kumayt al-Atakiyyah, from her mother: Umaymah. She said: I said to Umm Amr, the freedwoman of Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Umm Amr, have you heard your mother Ruzaynah mention that she heard Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, speak about fasting on the day of Ashura?"

She replied: "Yes, he used to revere it, supplicate for his breastfeeding children and the breastfed children of his daughter Fatimah, moisten their mouths, and instruct the mothers not to breastfeed them until night."

Abu al-Hasan informed us that Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn al-Mutawakkil narrated to us from Ubaydullah ibn Umar al-Qawariri, and he mentioned the same with its chain of narration but did not say al-Atakiyyah. He said that his mother informed him, Umm Umaymah, without mentioning that she was the freedwoman of Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.

[1] Ruzaynah is the freedwoman of Safiyyah, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and she was also a servant of Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. She has a mention in al-Isabah: (4:302).

[2] This was documented by Abu Muslim al-Kashi and Abu Nuaym in al-Dalail, al-Isabah (4:302).
