Chapter on Supplications for Sustenance and Protection in the Prophet’s Time

It was narrated that Abu Huraira said: A man came to his family and saw they were in need. So, he went out to the wilderness. His wife prayed: "O Allah, grant us what we need and relieve us of our hardship." Then, the mill was filled with flour, the millstone was grinding, and the oven was full of bread and meat. When her husband came, she said they have provision. He then raised the mill and swept around it, and when he mentioned this to the Prophet, he said, "Had you left it, it would have turned until the Day of Resurrection."

Hadith Transmission

It was reported through a chain of narrators up to Abu Huraira who relayed this incident. Additionally, further narrators are mentioned pertaining to the transmission of this Hadith.

The Generosity of a Woman from the Ansar

Once, a man from the Ansar had a need, so he went out one day with nothing to offer his guests. His wife suggested grinding some barley and starting the grindstone to give the impression to their neighbors that they were preparing food. The woman followed her plan, and soon the sound and smoke from the grindstone were noticeable. Her husband heard the noise and asked her what she was grinding. She told him she was grinding barley.

Upon seeing how the grindstone was moving and producing flour, the husband asked to see what his wife was doing. To his surprise, their house was filled with various containers brimming with flour. The woman then checked the oven and found it full of freshly baked bread. The husband was amazed and reported the incident to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Prophet inquired about the grindstone, and the man explained that he had adjusted it and kept it moving. The Prophet responded that had they left it as it was without interfering, it would have continued to produce food for them.

A Lesson in Faith

In another story, a man named Awf ibn Malik came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) seeking help, as his family had been attacked and his son and camels were taken. The Prophet reassured Awf, emphasizing the poverty of his own household compared to others - they had only a few measures of food. The Prophet advised Awf to pray to Allah.

Upon returning home and informing his wife about the conversation with the Prophet, they were blessed with the return of his son and camels in a better state than before. The man returned to the Prophet and shared the good news, prompting the Prophet to express gratitude to Allah, encourage seeking His help, and recite the verse: "And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect” (Quran 65:2-3).
