Chapter on the Incident of a Doe Suckling Her Offspring out of Fear

Narrated to us Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz that Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Duhaime Ash-Shaybani informed us, who narrated from Ahmed ibn Hazim ibn Abu Garzah Al-Ghifari, who narrated from Ali ibn Qadim, who narrated from Abu Al-Ala' Khalid ibn Tahman, from Atiyya, from Abu Sa'id who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a doe tied near a shelter. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, allow me to go and suckle my young out of fear, and then return to be tied.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'The hunting of a people and the securing (tying) of a people.' He then allowed her and she swore it and he untied her. She did not remain long until she came back having shed what was in her udders. The Messenger of Allah then tied her. He went to the Companions with her and they offered to buy her from him, but he gave her to them as a gift. Then the Messenger of Allah said: 'If only you knew what beasts know of death, you would not have slaughtered from among them any fattened animal forever.'"

Alternate Weak Narrative

Narrated to us Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan Al-Qadi that Abu Ali Hamid ibn Muhammad Al-Hawari informed us, who narrated from Bishr ibn Musa, who narrated from Abu Hafs Amru bin Ali.

The Prophet's Mercy

Yahya ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazzal narrated to us, reporting from Al-Haytham ibn Hammad, who reported from Abu Kathir, who recounted from Zaid ibn Arqam, saying:

"I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on some of the paths of Al-Madinah. We passed by the tent of a Bedouin woman, and there was a tied-up doe outside the tent. She said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this Bedouin captured me while I was grazing in the wilderness. The milk has collected in my udders, and he neither milks me to relieve me nor lets me go back to my young one in the wilderness.' The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked her, 'If I leave you, will you return?' She replied, 'Yes, or else Allah will punish me with a severe punishment.' So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, let her go. She did not take long before she came back, dragging herself. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took the doe back to the tent. The Bedouin approached, holding a vessel of milk, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him, 'Are you following her?' The Bedouin said, 'She is yours, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, let her go."

Zaid ibn Arqam said, "By Allah, I saw her grazing in the wilderness, declaring, 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.'
