Chapter on the Miracle Manifested by Tameem al-Dari, May Allah be Pleased with Him

Abu al-Hussain bin al-Fadl al-Qattan narrated to us, that Abu Sahl bin Ziyad informed us, who narrated from Ishaq bin al-Hasan al-Harbi, who narrated from Afan bin Muslim, who narrated from Hammad bin Salamah, from al-Jurayri, from Abu al-Ala, from Muawiyah bin Hirmal, who said: "I arrived in Al-Madinah and stayed in the mosque for three days without eating. Then I went to Umar and said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, I repent before it is imposed upon me.' He asked: 'Who are you?' I replied: 'I am Muawiyah bin Hirmal.' He said: 'Go to the best of the believers and stay with him.' It was the habit of Tameem al-Dari that when he prayed, he would strike his right and left hand and then take two men and walk away with them. I prayed beside him and he struck his hand, so I took his hand and went with him. We were provided with food, and I ate voraciously but did not satiate from the severity of the hunger. One day, a fire erupted in Harrah. Umar came to Tameem and said: 'Stand up to this fire.' Tameem replied: 'O Commander of the Faithful! Who am I and what am I?' Umar persisted until he stood up with him. I followed them as they went towards the fire, Tameem striking the ground with his hand until they entered the flames. Tameem protected them with his hand until they emerged, while he followed behind. Umar then said: 'One who has seen is not like one who has not seen.' He repeated this statement thrice.
