Chapter on the Supplication of Nabighah and Allah's Response to Him

Abu Uthman Saeed ibn Muhammad ibn Abdan informed us, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Muammal narrated to us, Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Sawwar informed us, Ismail ibn Abdullah ibn Khalid al-Sukkari narrated to us, he said: Ya'la ibn al-Ashdaq informed us, he said: I heard Nabighah Nabighah ibn Ja'dah saying, "I recited this poem to the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him, and he admired it:

We have reached greatness in our glory and pride... Yet we still hope for a higher manifestation

He then asked me, 'Where is this higher manifestation, O Abu Layla?' I replied, 'It is in Paradise.' He said, 'So be it, God willing.'

There is no goodness in forbearance if it lacks... Beginning signs that protect its purity from becoming tainted

And there is no goodness in ignorance if it lacks... Forbearance when facing issues and taking decisions

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'You have spoke well, may your mouth be rinsed.' Ya'la said, 'I indeed saw him. He was Nabighah ibn Ja'dah: Qais ibn Abdullah ibn Adas ibn Rabia al-Judai al-Amiri, known as Abu Layla, a senior companion and a poet from the older generation. He abandoned idolatry and prohibited wine even before the advent of Islam. He embraced Islam after meeting the Prophet, peace be upon him, and participated in the Battle of Siffin alongside Ali. He settled in Kufa and passed away during the time of Muawiyah, having lost his vision and lived over a hundred years. (Please check footnotes for references)

بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي دُعَائِهِ لِنَابِغَةَ [ (١) ] وَإِجَابَةِ اللهِ- تَعَالَى- لَهُ فِيمَا دَعَاهُ بِهِأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُؤَمَّلِ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَوَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ السُّكَّرِيُّ الرَّقِّيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ الْأَشْدَقِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّابِغَةَ نَابِغَةَ بَنِي جَعْدَةَ يَقُولُ أَنْشَدْتُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وَسَلَّمَ هَذَا الشَّعْرَ فَأَعْجَبَهُ.«بَلَغْنَا السَّمَاءَ مَجْدُنَا وَثَرَاؤُنَا ... وَإِنَّا لَنَرْجُو فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ مظهر»فَقَالَ لِي: إِلَى أَيْنَ الْمَظْهَرُ يَا أَبَا لَيْلَى؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ:كَذَلِكَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ.«فَلَا خَيْرَ فِي حِلْمٍ إِذَا لَمْ تَكُنْ لَهُ ... بَوَادِرُ تَحْمِي صَفْوَهُ أَنْ يُكَدَّرَا»«وَلَا خَيْرَ فِي جَهْلٍ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ ... حَلِيمٌ إِذَا مَا أَوْرَدَ الْأَمْرَ أَصْدَرَا»فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَجَدْتَ لَا يُفْضَضُ فُوكَ. قَالَ يَعْلَى: فَلَقَدْ رأيته ولقد[ (١) ] هو نابغة بني جعدة: قيس بن عبد الله بن عدس بن ربيعة الجعدي العامري، أبو ليلى، شاعر مغلق صحابي من المعمرين، كان ممن هجر الأوثان، ونهى عن الخمر قبل ظهور الإسلام، ووفد عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلم فأسلم، وأدرك صفين فشهدها مع علي، ثم سكن الكوفة، فمات فيها زمن معاوية، وقد كف بصره وجاوز المئة. سمط اللآلئ (٢٤٧) ، واللباب (١: ٢٣٠) ، والأغاني (٦: ٢٦٥) ، والإصابة.

Passage Translation

It has reached him that Nayif lived for a hundred years, and not a single tooth fell off. This was narrated by Mujahid bin Sulaim from Abdullah bin Jarad who said: I heard Nabigha saying that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard me say in my poetry: ‘Our fame has reached the skies, with honor and respect... and after that we hope for eternal glory.’ Then Nabigha recited the rest of the poem in its entirety, saying: “I saw his teeth as if they were hailstones that did not fall or shake.”

Ali bin Ahmad bin Abdan informed us, Ahmad bin Ubayd reported to us, Ibn Abi Qimash narrated to us from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Habib from Sa'id bin Sulaim al-Bahili from Mujahid bin Sulaim and mentioned it.

Al-Suyuti mentioned it in Al-Khasa'is al-Kubra (2:167) and attributed it to Ibn al-Sakan.

أَتَى عَلَيْهِ نَيِّفٌ وَمِائَةُ سَنَةٍ وَمَا ذَهَبَ لَهُ سِنٌّ[ (٢) ] .وَرُوِيَ ذَلِكَ عَنْ مُجَاهِدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَرَادٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ نَابِغَةَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عليه وسلم وأنا أَنْشُدُ مِنْ قُولِي:بَلَغَنَا السَّمَاءَ عِفَّةً وَتَكَرُّمًا ... وَإِنَّا لَنَرْجُو بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مَظْهَرَاثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْبَاقِيَ بِمَعْنَاهُ، قَالَ: فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ سِنَّهُ كَأَنَّهَا الْبَرَدُ الْمُنْهَلُّ مَا سَقَطَتْ لَهُ سِنٌّ وَلَا تَفَلَّتَتْ [ (٣) ] .أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي قِمَاشٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ الْبَاهِلِيِّ: عَنْ مُجَاهِدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ فَذَكَرَهُ.[ (٢) ] السيوطي في الخصائص الكبرى (٢: ١٦٦) عن المصنف، وعن دلائل أبي نعيم.[ (٣) ] ذكره السيوطي في الخصائص الكبرى (٢: ١٦٧) وعزاه لابن السكن.
